at Jaffa <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> month of May 1800, which loss <strong>in</strong> diseases amounted<br />

at least to eight thous<strong>and</strong> men.<br />

Jan. 27. A tremendous gale of w<strong>in</strong>d, with ra<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> hail, ac-<br />

companied with loud thunder, <strong>and</strong> vivid lightn<strong>in</strong>g, came on this<br />

even<strong>in</strong>g. The gale, still accompanied by ra<strong>in</strong>, cont<strong>in</strong>ued until<br />

<strong>the</strong> 3 1st before it moderated.<br />

Jan. 31. The Haznadar, or treasurer of <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier,<br />

died this day of plague.<br />

Only one case of <strong>in</strong>termittent (quotidian) <strong>and</strong> a case of dysentery<br />

on our sick list this month.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>termittent yielded easily to <strong>the</strong> bark.<br />

The three men <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lazaretto tent were released from conf<strong>in</strong>e-<br />

ment.<br />

Feb. 7. F<strong>in</strong>e wea<strong>the</strong>r s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> 4th <strong>in</strong>stant. W<strong>in</strong>d N. E. or<br />

E. The horizon clear.<br />

The stormy wea<strong>the</strong>r commenced usually with a mist, or hazi-<br />

ness of atmosphere, com<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> southward <strong>the</strong> day preced<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> storm; <strong>and</strong> a large disk or circle round <strong>the</strong> moon. The mis-<br />

sion was <strong>in</strong> tolerable good health, except that <strong>the</strong> cold, ra<strong>in</strong>y sea-<br />

son was very generally productive of pa<strong>in</strong>ful gl<strong>and</strong>ular tumefac-<br />

tions. This happen<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> pestilential season, <strong>and</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g one of<br />

<strong>the</strong> symptoms of plague, gave rise to some alarm among those at-<br />

tacked ; but, be<strong>in</strong>g unaccompanied with febrile symptoms, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

fears soon subsided. Some of <strong>the</strong>se tumors suppurated among <strong>the</strong><br />

children :<br />

a general relief was afforded by warm fomentations, flan-<br />

nel, &c.<br />

The Vizier was taken ill with fever, <strong>the</strong> apparent effects of cold,<br />

his compla<strong>in</strong>ts yielded <strong>in</strong> a few days to antimonial remedies, pedi-<br />

luvium, Sec.<br />

Feb. 14. The wea<strong>the</strong>r has been f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> last week. No fresh<br />

case of plague for several days past among <strong>the</strong> Turks. But reports<br />

from Fl-Arisli state, that it prevails fatally <strong>in</strong> that camp :<br />

<strong>the</strong>y<br />

have lost several thous<strong>and</strong> men with<strong>in</strong> a few weeks.<br />

A Venetian Doctor died this day<br />

of malignant fever, <strong>the</strong> 3th<br />

day from attack. The apo<strong>the</strong>cary reported, that <strong>the</strong>re were three<br />

or four cases of <strong>the</strong> same fever <strong>in</strong> Jaffa camp.<br />

The wea<strong>the</strong>r to-day hazy, <strong>and</strong> sultrv, though <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmometer<br />

<strong>in</strong> shade, at two o'clock P. M. 66.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> ] 6th <strong>the</strong>re was a gale of w<strong>in</strong>d, which raised clouds of<br />

s<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> atmosphere, <strong>and</strong> which was extremely annoy<strong>in</strong>g
