On <strong>the</strong> 7th Mahomed Pacha reached <strong>the</strong> camp from Hamlet*<br />

with troops, by whom <strong>the</strong> usual discharges of musketry were<br />

made on enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ground; <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> 14th Hassan Bey Ljadavi<br />

quilted <strong>the</strong> camp for El-Arish, with a corps of five hundred<br />

Mamelukes.<br />

Here my narrative is about to take a new turn. A visit to Jeru-<br />

salem* <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>the</strong> Holy L<strong>and</strong>, had been for some tim<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> state of <strong>in</strong>action <strong>in</strong> which we found ourselves at<br />

projected ;<br />

this juncture prompted us to gratify our ardent curiosity, by <strong>the</strong> ac-<br />

complishment of such a journey, <strong>the</strong> particulars<br />

now proceed to detail.<br />

ON <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 15th of October, before break of day,<br />

we left <strong>the</strong> camp on our way to Jerusalem. Our party consisted<br />

of <strong>the</strong> General <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Koehler, Major Hope, Capta<strong>in</strong><br />

Leake, Messrs. Ch<strong>and</strong>ler, Whiteman, P<strong>in</strong>k, <strong>and</strong> myself. We<br />

were accompanied bv <strong>the</strong> choarbagi, a p?rty of janissaries, a small<br />

detachment of Turkish horsemen, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r guards <strong>and</strong> attendants.
