JIO TRAVELS IN ASIATIC TURKEY*<br />

sonisi. We found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bay a caick bound from Rhodes to Sciu.<br />

We were told that <strong>the</strong>re was a town with<strong>in</strong> two leagues of us ;<br />

but were prevented from l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g by<br />

<strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>s which fell<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

greater part of <strong>the</strong> day. On <strong>the</strong> sides of <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

adjacent vallies, we observed several f<strong>in</strong>e v<strong>in</strong>eyards.<br />

We were prevented from sail<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> 26th by a gale from <strong>the</strong><br />

north-east, which was so violent, that, notwithst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g this was a<br />

favourable po<strong>in</strong>t for our dest<strong>in</strong>ation, our Reis was unwill<strong>in</strong>g to put<br />

to sea. As it ra<strong>in</strong>ed at <strong>the</strong> time, we l<strong>and</strong>ed between <strong>the</strong> showers,<br />

<strong>and</strong> made an excursion to <strong>the</strong> neighbour<strong>in</strong>g mounta<strong>in</strong>s. We passed<br />

through several vallies, <strong>the</strong> soil of which was rich <strong>and</strong> of a reddish<br />

colour, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> cultivation not neglected. The mounta<strong>in</strong>s are<br />

composed of rocks of blue <strong>and</strong> white marble, blended with a stone<br />

called <strong>the</strong> sat<strong>in</strong> stone ; In <strong>the</strong> parts susceptible of cultivation <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are planted with olive-trees, firs, <strong>the</strong> mastic, <strong>the</strong> arbutus, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

trees <strong>and</strong> shrubs. We did not meet with any dwell<strong>in</strong>gs ; but pas-<br />

sed two or three small caves, which appeared to be dest<strong>in</strong>ed to re-<br />

ceive <strong>the</strong> grapes when ripe : For <strong>the</strong> purpose of conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> juice,<br />

after it has been expressed from <strong>the</strong> fruit, we saw <strong>in</strong> each of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

caves a small cistern. From <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>gs which issued from <strong>the</strong><br />

rocks we procured exrellent water.<br />

At five <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 27th we got under way, but were<br />

soon after becalmed. At seven o'clock we had a gentle breeze from<br />

<strong>the</strong> westward ; <strong>and</strong> bore away as soon as we had wea<strong>the</strong>red <strong>the</strong><br />

north-east po<strong>in</strong>t of <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, Satlanova be<strong>in</strong>g distant from us<br />

about fifteen or twenty miles to <strong>the</strong> east. W r<br />

e were becalmed for<br />

several hours ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> at half past two o'clock P. M. were under <strong>the</strong><br />

necessity of enter<strong>in</strong>g a f<strong>in</strong>e bay on <strong>the</strong> north side of <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

where we came to anchor. We l<strong>and</strong>ed, <strong>and</strong> walked to <strong>the</strong> v<strong>in</strong>e-<br />

yards, which were <strong>in</strong> a<br />

very flourish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

state. Among <strong>the</strong> shrubs<br />

which at grew <strong>the</strong> sides of <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s, we noticed <strong>the</strong> juniper,<br />

<strong>the</strong> berries on which were uncommonly large. Three of our crew<br />

were sent to a neighbour<strong>in</strong>g town, called by <strong>the</strong> Turks Vati, dis-<br />

tant from <strong>the</strong> bay about a league <strong>and</strong> a half, to procure bread, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r articles of which we stood <strong>in</strong> need. We had ourselves<br />

made an arrangement to l<strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g morn<strong>in</strong>g ; but our<br />

Reis disappo<strong>in</strong>ted us by gett<strong>in</strong>g under way before day light. His<br />

sudden departure was occasioned by <strong>the</strong> dread he still enterta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

of <strong>the</strong> pirates, who are said constantly to lurk <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity of<br />

this isl<strong>and</strong>. The nor<strong>the</strong>rn side, which we were now coast<strong>in</strong>g, is<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>cipally laid out <strong>in</strong> v<strong>in</strong>eyards : The l<strong>and</strong> is lofty <strong>and</strong> irregular.
