274 TRAVELS IN ASIATIC TURKEY,<br />

nary that he should have received <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fection for <strong>the</strong> first time<br />

at so advanced an age, when it was reasonable to apprehend that,<br />

from <strong>the</strong> torpor <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>activity which must have been generally <strong>in</strong>-<br />

duced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> temperament, he would have been least susceptible to<br />

disease.<br />

It was reported at Boulac, on <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 5th, that a se-<br />

rious quarrel had taken place between <strong>the</strong> Albanians <strong>and</strong> janissaries.<br />

It proved, however, on enquiry, to have been a dispute between<br />

<strong>the</strong> former <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mograbian Arabs, by whom <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

accused of hav<strong>in</strong>g stolen several of <strong>the</strong>ir boys. The <strong>in</strong>terference<br />

of <strong>the</strong> janissaries was necessary to quell <strong>the</strong> riot, <strong>the</strong> animosity of<br />

<strong>the</strong> parties hav<strong>in</strong>g been such, that several on each side were killed,<br />

<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs wounded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> contest.<br />

I rode on <strong>the</strong> 8 th to Bassatee, a village distant about five miles,<br />

<strong>in</strong> a sou<strong>the</strong>rn direction, from Cairo. In <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity of this vil-<br />

lage <strong>the</strong> grounds<br />

were stiil moistened with <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>s which had re-<br />

cently fallen, notwithst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g we had had at Cairo, which was<br />

with<strong>in</strong> so short a distance, an almost constant drought. A party<br />

of sick, seventy <strong>in</strong> number, belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Indian army, who<br />

had been left at Suez, arrived at Cairo about this time. They as-<br />

sured me that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong>ir march through <strong>the</strong> <strong>desert</strong>, .<strong>the</strong>y<br />

had encountered several violent storms, accompanied by very heavy<br />

showers of ra<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> that it was with<br />

great difficulty <strong>the</strong>y could<br />

to me<br />

prevent <strong>the</strong>ir tents from be<strong>in</strong>g blown down. This appeared<br />

<strong>the</strong> more extraord<strong>in</strong>ary,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r at Cairo, dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

of <strong>the</strong> month of October, <strong>and</strong> even to <strong>the</strong> present date of Novem-<br />

ber, had been free from storms, <strong>and</strong> uncommonly mild <strong>and</strong> tem-<br />

perate, with a moderate refresh<strong>in</strong>g breeze <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong><br />

even<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Colonel Lloyd., of <strong>the</strong> SGth regiment, arrived at Giza on <strong>the</strong><br />

above day, with a detachment of three hundred men, from <strong>the</strong> en-<br />

campment before Bosetta.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 12th, <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmometer be<strong>in</strong>g at 59, I<br />

took equal parts of powdered nitre <strong>and</strong> sal ammoniac, <strong>and</strong> threw<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to a vessel conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g water, <strong>in</strong>to which I <strong>in</strong>troduced a<br />

phial filled with that liquid, <strong>and</strong>, f<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmometer. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> course of a few m<strong>in</strong>utes <strong>the</strong> fell mercury to 32, <strong>the</strong><br />

po<strong>in</strong>t, at which it rema<strong>in</strong>ed, however, a few seconds ; only when<br />

it rose to 38, where it rema<strong>in</strong>ed for some time. Fear<strong>in</strong>g that I<br />

should not succeed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> production of ice, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> present experiment,<br />

I withdrew <strong>the</strong> phial which conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> water, with a
