SYRIA, EGYPT, GERMANY, &C. 65<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 26th I made an excursion to <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s, whence I<br />

had <strong>the</strong> satisfaction of survey<strong>in</strong>g one of <strong>the</strong> most beautiful pros-<br />

pects imag<strong>in</strong>ation can pa<strong>in</strong>t. In my rear was Mount Ida ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

front <strong>the</strong> Dardanelles, toge<strong>the</strong>r with Imbros, Samothrace, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Suronic Gulf. Tenedos, Lemnos, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> JEgean Sea, were<br />

to <strong>the</strong> left; <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong><br />

right Gallipoli, Marmora, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r distant<br />

objects. The sun sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g very bright,<br />

<strong>the</strong> tops of Mount Ida,<br />

<strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Samothracian hills,<br />

snow.<br />

glittered with accumulated masses of<br />

The Capitan Pacha hav<strong>in</strong>g this day given an order that several<br />

unserviceable guns should be broken <strong>in</strong> pieces, <strong>the</strong> Topgis Bashi,<br />

or comm<strong>and</strong>ant of Turkish artillery, took <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g method<br />

to carrv it <strong>in</strong>to execution. A large pile of wood hav<strong>in</strong>g been laid<br />

on <strong>the</strong><br />

guns,<br />

was set fire to <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

even<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> kept burn<strong>in</strong>g until<br />

early <strong>the</strong> next morn<strong>in</strong>g, when an account was brought that a Turk-<br />

ish gunner had been killed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Capitan Pacha's chief gunner<br />

wounded, bv <strong>the</strong> burst<strong>in</strong>g of one of <strong>the</strong> guns <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fire. In ac-<br />

count<strong>in</strong>g for this accident, various op<strong>in</strong>ions were enterta<strong>in</strong>ed. It<br />

was ascribed by some to <strong>the</strong> circumstance of a quantity of cold<br />

water hav<strong>in</strong>g been thrown on <strong>the</strong> heated metal by <strong>the</strong> Turks em-<br />

ployed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> operation ; but it appeared to us more probable,<br />

that, hav<strong>in</strong>g neglected to withdraw <strong>the</strong> charge, an explosion took<br />

place on <strong>the</strong> gun be<strong>in</strong>g heated. Several of <strong>the</strong> fragments were<br />

thrown to a considerable distance. The poor Topgis Bashi was<br />

so much alarmed by <strong>the</strong> disastrous event which had occurred, that<br />

he immediately betook himself to flight, as did also his bro<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

from an apprehension of <strong>the</strong> consequences of <strong>the</strong> Capitan Pacha's<br />

displeasure.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 30th <strong>the</strong> Phteton frigate arrived from Constant<strong>in</strong>ople with<br />

letters which occasioned <strong>the</strong> removal of <strong>the</strong> mission to that place, as<br />

a step preparatory to its be<strong>in</strong>g employed on some important service.<br />

Orders were <strong>in</strong> consequence issued by <strong>the</strong> General that <strong>the</strong> officers<br />

<strong>and</strong> detachment should hold <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>ess to embark <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g morn<strong>in</strong>g on board <strong>the</strong> transport. The w<strong>in</strong>d be<strong>in</strong>g north-<br />

erly, however, <strong>the</strong>re was a prospect or our be<strong>in</strong>g deta<strong>in</strong>ed at Chennecallu<br />

for some days.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 1st of December I embarked on board <strong>the</strong> transport with<br />

my baggage; <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g day<br />

<strong>the</strong> officers <strong>and</strong> detachment<br />

embarked, The General was to proceed to Constant<strong>in</strong>ople <strong>in</strong> a<br />

Turkish boat. In <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g I went over to Mito, on <strong>the</strong> Eu-<br />
