Dec. 18. Very heavy showers of ra<strong>in</strong> fell, accompanied with<br />

stormy wea<strong>the</strong>r, loud thunder, <strong>and</strong> vivid lightn<strong>in</strong>g. Cold w<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

from <strong>the</strong> S. S. W. Fahrenheit's <strong>the</strong>rmometer at noon, ac 62 de-<br />

grees.<br />

The sudden changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r produced rheumatisms, but<br />

no o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>disposition among <strong>the</strong> mission.<br />

Plague <strong>and</strong> mortality among <strong>the</strong> Turks had abated s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong><br />

boisterous wea<strong>the</strong>r came on.<br />

Dec. 26. Brigadier General Koehler, who had been <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

<strong>in</strong> die greatest distress of m<strong>in</strong>d s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> death of his wife, was<br />

seized with putrid fever, <strong>and</strong> died <strong>the</strong> 29th <strong>in</strong>stant.<br />

Dec. 28. The <strong>the</strong>rmometer before sun-rise was as low as 35.<br />

The wea<strong>the</strong>r variable this month, particularly from <strong>the</strong> 17th, when<br />

we had cold blow<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>ds; much ra<strong>in</strong> fell suddenly, with heavy<br />

claps of thunder, <strong>and</strong> vivid<br />

lightn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

1801. Jan. 1. Except <strong>the</strong> seizure <strong>and</strong> death of General Koehler,<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce our arrival upon <strong>the</strong> new ground of encampment, <strong>the</strong><br />

mission was nearly free from disease. The remarkable change of<br />

<strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r, which had for some time been cold, (<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmome-<br />

ter before sun-rise be<strong>in</strong>g at 35), <strong>and</strong> boisterous, accompanied with<br />

much thunder, lightn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> very heavy ra<strong>in</strong>s, had considerably<br />

dim<strong>in</strong>ished disease <strong>and</strong> mortality among <strong>the</strong> Ottoman troops, as<br />

well as ourselves.<br />

Jan. 8. The wea<strong>the</strong>r, dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> last week, cont<strong>in</strong>ued ra<strong>in</strong>y,<br />

cold, <strong>and</strong> boisterous.<br />

The Reis Effendi assured me to-day, that, although<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were<br />

cases of plague with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ottoman camp, yet <strong>the</strong> disease was become<br />

<strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itely more mild, <strong>and</strong> consequently less fatal. That several<br />

persons who had been lately attacked, had recovered. He<br />

<strong>in</strong>stanced <strong>the</strong> cases of five slaves belon^<strong>in</strong>^ to <strong>the</strong> Vizier, three of<br />

whom survived <strong>the</strong> attack. He remarked, that <strong>the</strong> same circum-<br />

stance happened at Constant<strong>in</strong>ople when <strong>the</strong> disease was upon <strong>the</strong><br />

decl<strong>in</strong>e. From this fact <strong>the</strong> Turks predicted <strong>the</strong> speedy cessation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> plague.<br />

Jan. 12. Dr. h'osari, <strong>the</strong> Vizier's own physician, died of plague<br />

this day, after <strong>the</strong> third day's illness. Some days previously to his<br />

<strong>in</strong>disposition, he assured me, that he had made every possible en-<br />

quiry to ascerta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> loss of <strong>the</strong> Turks s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> camp was formed
