TRAVELS IN ASIATIC TURKEY,<br />

mummies, on a s<strong>and</strong>y hill cr em<strong>in</strong>ence, whose bottom is of hard<br />

rock,<br />

a circumstance that was observable when we entered <strong>the</strong><br />

pits.<br />

Across this lake, which ran east <strong>and</strong> west, was a large mound,<br />

or causeway, which led from a village opposite to Saccara to <strong>the</strong><br />

foot of <strong>the</strong> pyramids, <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> commencement of which, next to<br />

<strong>the</strong> village, was a stone bridge hav<strong>in</strong>g several arches. Near to it<br />

was an elevated ground, which, as it corresponded exactly with <strong>the</strong><br />

account some authors have given<br />

of <strong>the</strong> position of Memphis, we<br />

fancied to be <strong>the</strong> site of that ancient <strong>and</strong> celebrated city. Our con-<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>-<br />

jectures relative to <strong>the</strong> lake were that it had been applied by<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir dead to<br />

habitants of Memphis to <strong>the</strong> purpose of transport<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> or sepulchrt of mummies.<br />

Previously to our arrival <strong>the</strong> Sheick of Bousir, a neighbour<strong>in</strong>g<br />

village, had been requested to procure us horses <strong>and</strong> guides to enable<br />

us <strong>the</strong> mere readily<br />

to reach <strong>the</strong><br />

pyramids,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r spots<br />

we were desirous to visit. They were no sooner arrived than we<br />

mounted <strong>and</strong> rode to <strong>the</strong> pyramids <strong>and</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong> mummies, ha-<br />

v<strong>in</strong>g taken <strong>the</strong> precaution to be provided with rope-ladders, c<strong>and</strong>les,<br />

<strong>and</strong> whatever besides was necessary for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation of <strong>the</strong> ca-<br />

tacombs, <strong>in</strong>to which we were about to descend. In enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

pit we were obliged to take off a part of our garments ; <strong>and</strong>, ha-<br />

v<strong>in</strong>g reached <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior, were struck with awe by <strong>the</strong> solemn <strong>and</strong><br />

novel scene which presented itself to our view. With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sub-<br />

terraneous vaults or chambers <strong>the</strong> bones of mutilated mummies,<br />

which had been so often rifled <strong>and</strong> disturbed that not one of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

could be found <strong>in</strong> an entire state, lay<br />

scattered <strong>in</strong> confused heaps,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> b<strong>and</strong>ages <strong>and</strong> coat<strong>in</strong>gs by which <strong>the</strong>y had been<br />

enveloped, <strong>the</strong> latter resembl<strong>in</strong>g a black bitum<strong>in</strong>ous substance. As<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vaults had preserved its orig<strong>in</strong>al position,<br />

it was <strong>in</strong><br />

va<strong>in</strong> for us to prosecute our researches to come at any th<strong>in</strong>g<br />

like a<br />

perfect mummy; <strong>and</strong> we contented ourselves accord<strong>in</strong>gly with collect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

s.ome of <strong>the</strong> mutilated portions, <strong>and</strong> some of <strong>the</strong> bitum<strong>in</strong>ous<br />

matter, ascend<strong>in</strong>g afterwards to <strong>the</strong> mouth or pit of <strong>the</strong> catacombs.<br />

The air of <strong>the</strong> cells <strong>in</strong>to which we had penetrated was foul, noi-<br />

some, <strong>and</strong> exrremely unpleasant to our sensations, s<strong>in</strong>ce, <strong>in</strong>depen-<br />

dently of <strong>the</strong> exclusion of <strong>the</strong> external air, <strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> generation<br />

of damp vapours, <strong>the</strong>re was an additional source of noxious effluvia<br />

from <strong>the</strong> gradual <strong>and</strong> progressive decay of <strong>the</strong> substances <strong>the</strong>y con-<br />

ta<strong>in</strong>ed. They appeared to have been cut out of <strong>the</strong> solid rock, <strong>and</strong><br />

'o have been coated on <strong>the</strong> superior part by a thick layer of s<strong>and</strong>.
