<strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> is embellished by rows of f<strong>in</strong>e<br />

cypress-trees.<br />

In<br />

pass<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> avenues lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>se gardens,<br />

<strong>the</strong> traveller<br />

is delighted by <strong>the</strong> grateful odours which are constantly exhaled <strong>and</strong><br />

perfume <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g atmosphere.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> course of our ride we saw an abundance of <strong>the</strong> tereb<strong>in</strong>-<br />

tha trees, from which <strong>the</strong> turpent<strong>in</strong>e is collected by a process simi-<br />

lar to that employed <strong>in</strong> procur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> gum mastic. Except that<br />

<strong>the</strong> bark of <strong>the</strong> trunk is more rough <strong>and</strong> irregular, this tree has so<br />

great a resemblance to <strong>the</strong> ash, that I was <strong>in</strong>duced, on reflection,<br />

to th<strong>in</strong>k myself deceived when I supposed <strong>the</strong> latter tree to growon<br />

<strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>s we had precedently visited. We passed several spots<br />

of ground abound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> fullers' earth <strong>and</strong> potters' clay ; <strong>and</strong> were<br />

led, by every th<strong>in</strong>g we had observed, to consider a great portion<br />

of <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> of Scio as abound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> useful <strong>and</strong> valuable productions.<br />

It is certa<strong>in</strong>ly over peopled <strong>in</strong> proportion to its extent, <strong>and</strong><br />

to <strong>the</strong> resources of its soil; but this circumstance operat<strong>in</strong>g as a<br />

powerful stimulus to <strong>in</strong>dustry, <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>s susceptible of improvement<br />

are cultivated with <strong>the</strong> utmost labour <strong>and</strong> perseverance.<br />

It<br />

is probable that <strong>the</strong> freedom <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants enjoy <strong>in</strong>duces <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

prefer Scio' to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r isl<strong>and</strong>s. Its population<br />

has been over-rated<br />

by those who have computed it at upwards of seventy thous<strong>and</strong><br />

souls : from <strong>the</strong> most accurate <strong>in</strong>formation I could collect, it does<br />

not exceed fifty thous<strong>and</strong>, of whom <strong>the</strong> great majority are Greeks,<br />

with two thous<strong>and</strong> Turks, one thous<strong>and</strong> Catholics, <strong>and</strong> a few<br />

Jews.<br />

The town of Scio is of a moderate extent, <strong>and</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>s several<br />

f<strong>in</strong>e stone edifices, built by <strong>the</strong> Genoese at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>in</strong><br />

possession of <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>. They also constructed a fortress, which<br />

is at present <strong>in</strong> a ru<strong>in</strong>ous condition. The houses of <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

<strong>in</strong>habitants are as elegant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir structure <strong>and</strong> external decorations<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y are h<strong>and</strong>somely furnished with<strong>in</strong>. The isl<strong>and</strong> supplies a<br />

variety of variegated marbles of different colours, which are<br />

wrought <strong>in</strong>to columns, pavements of floors, door jambs, l<strong>in</strong>tels,<br />

&c. The Genoese houses are tiled, with a slop<strong>in</strong>g roof; but those<br />

of a more modern construction arc surmounted by flat terraces.<br />

The streets <strong>in</strong> general are narrow, paved, 'have a raised footway,<br />

<strong>and</strong> are kept tolerably clean, consider<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that Scio is with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> limits<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Turkish dom<strong>in</strong>ions. The bazars are well supplied; but<br />

<strong>the</strong> articles <strong>the</strong>y conta<strong>in</strong> are sold at ra<strong>the</strong>r an exorbitant price. Scio<br />

carries on an extensive trade with Legfldrm <strong>and</strong> several o<strong>the</strong>r ports<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean. Its manufactures consist of silk <strong>and</strong> sat<strong>in</strong>
