pods. The barley cultivated <strong>in</strong> patches was also very promis<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

We saw an abundance of wild fowl on our route, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prosecu-<br />

tion of which we made but one halt.<br />

Kor<strong>in</strong> is a long village, <strong>in</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g through which noth<strong>in</strong>g is t©<br />

be seen except <strong>the</strong> walls of <strong>the</strong> mud huts. There is only one build-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> brick, a decaved mosque. The complexion of <strong>the</strong> wretched,<br />

half naked <strong>in</strong>habitants, many of whom are afflicted with bl<strong>in</strong>d-<br />

ness, is nearly black. Thev brought us water <strong>in</strong> white ear<strong>the</strong>n<br />

pitchers. With<strong>in</strong> little enclosures walled with mud <strong>the</strong>v have<br />

various k<strong>in</strong>ds of fruit-trees, such as <strong>the</strong> date, <strong>the</strong> Pharaoh fig, <strong>the</strong><br />

lemon, lime <strong>and</strong> orange, <strong>the</strong> lotus or lote,* <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> pomegranate.<br />

In pass<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> village, we were nearly bl<strong>in</strong>ded by <strong>the</strong> immense<br />

clouds of s<strong>and</strong>y particles which enveloped us on all sides.<br />

The troops encamped at a little distance fr»m <strong>the</strong> village, to <strong>the</strong><br />

eastward. On one side of us lay extensive fields of wheat, barley,<br />

<strong>and</strong> lup<strong>in</strong>e, while on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side a barren <strong>desert</strong> was <strong>in</strong> our view.<br />

The soil of <strong>the</strong> cultivated spots was gravelly, but was covered <strong>in</strong><br />

some parts by <strong>the</strong> rich black mud which <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>undation of <strong>the</strong><br />

Nile had left. I collected parcels of <strong>the</strong> lup<strong>in</strong>e seeds <strong>and</strong> wheat, to<br />

try <strong>the</strong> effect of <strong>the</strong>ir cultivation <strong>in</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

In our route we met with a considerable number of mud built<br />

villages, surrounded by high walls made of earth or mud, so as to<br />

form a square, at each of <strong>the</strong> angles of which <strong>the</strong>re is ei<strong>the</strong>r a<br />

round or a square tower. Ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re is a small hole for <strong>the</strong> en-<br />

trance <strong>in</strong>to each of <strong>the</strong> villages, or a ladder is employed to ga<strong>in</strong> ac-<br />

cess to it. Such is <strong>the</strong> uniform construction of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>and</strong><br />

it is most probable for <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g reasons : It was necessary, <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> first place, that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants shou:.<br />

flocks <strong>and</strong> cattle, from <strong>the</strong> general <strong>in</strong>undation of <strong>the</strong> Nile ; <strong>and</strong>,<br />

secondly, <strong>the</strong>y had to dread <strong>the</strong> attacks of <strong>the</strong> Bedou<strong>in</strong> Arabs,<br />

who were constantly<br />

hostile to <strong>the</strong> Felkhs, or tribes of cultiva-<br />

tors.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>habitants of Kor<strong>in</strong> had recently suffered from <strong>the</strong> plague,<br />

which was still mak<strong>in</strong>g great ravages <strong>in</strong> several adjacent villages.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Sth <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier <strong>and</strong> Reis EfFendi,<br />

accompanied by Colonel HolkWaij <strong>and</strong> Major Hope, marched to<br />

Belbeis, with a small part only<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir ret<strong>in</strong>ue. This sudden mea-<br />

sure was occasioned by discontents which had broken out at <strong>the</strong><br />

above place among <strong>the</strong> troops of Mahomed Pacha, but which<br />
