SYRIA, EGYPT, GERMANY, &C. 24I<br />

amidst <strong>the</strong> numerous little isl<strong>and</strong>s which <strong>the</strong> river had formed was<br />

On <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants were engaged <strong>in</strong><br />

highly agreeable.<br />

water<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> more elevated grounds which could not receive <strong>the</strong><br />

benefit of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>undation. For this purpose <strong>the</strong>y employed lea-<br />

<strong>the</strong>rn buckets, one of which was fastened to <strong>the</strong> extremity of a<br />

long pole, hav<strong>in</strong>g at its o<strong>the</strong>r extremity a heavy stone to counterpoise<br />

<strong>the</strong> weight of <strong>the</strong> bucket, <strong>and</strong> form<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this Way a k<strong>in</strong>d of<br />

lever. The water was thus drawn up from <strong>the</strong> Nile, <strong>and</strong> thrown<br />

<strong>in</strong>to troughs, from which furrows were carried to convey it to every<br />

part of <strong>the</strong> high grounds. On <strong>the</strong>se grounds <strong>the</strong> dourra or Indian<br />

corn <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>digo plant had a very healthy <strong>and</strong> promis<strong>in</strong>g ap-<br />

pearance.<br />

Between <strong>the</strong> two banks of <strong>the</strong> Nile <strong>the</strong>re was a s<strong>in</strong>gular contrast.<br />

The eastern shore exhibited little more than a <strong>desert</strong>, <strong>the</strong> cultiva-<br />

tion be<strong>in</strong>g conf<strong>in</strong>ed to a very narrow slip of l<strong>and</strong>, near <strong>the</strong> villages;<br />

<strong>and</strong> a cha<strong>in</strong> of<br />

lofty<br />

<strong>and</strong> sterile mounta<strong>in</strong>s which term<strong>in</strong>ated at<br />

Mount Mokatam near Cairo ; while <strong>the</strong> western bank displayed<br />

a<br />

considerable number of extensive groves of date-trees, <strong>in</strong>ter-<br />

spersed with grounds <strong>in</strong> a highly cultivated state. The rich <strong>and</strong><br />

beautiful appearance of <strong>the</strong> date-trees was at this time heightened<br />

by <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e golden colour of <strong>the</strong> ripen<strong>in</strong>g fruit. This was not, how-<br />

ever, <strong>the</strong> state <strong>in</strong> which it was preferred by <strong>the</strong> Arabs <strong>in</strong> general ;<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y eat it <strong>in</strong> its unripe <strong>and</strong> crude state, when it is very un-<br />

wholesome <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>digestible, is a fact I have already noticed; <strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong> reality, <strong>the</strong>ir choice with respect to fruits <strong>and</strong> vegetables of eve-<br />

ry description, which <strong>the</strong>y seem to prefer before <strong>the</strong>y have atta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

a due maturity, is highly depraved. Several of <strong>the</strong> date-trees were<br />

of <strong>the</strong> dwarf k<strong>in</strong>d, anil were denom<strong>in</strong>ated by <strong>the</strong> Arabs Belah Mahat,<br />

<strong>in</strong> contradist<strong>in</strong>ction to those of a larger growth, but yet of<br />

<strong>the</strong> dwarf k<strong>in</strong>d, which are called Belah Scezvay.<br />

We entered a small canal, <strong>and</strong> proceeded to <strong>the</strong> villages of<br />

Menshee <strong>and</strong> Dashou, distant from Gr<strong>and</strong> Cairo about twentyfour<br />

miles, <strong>and</strong> situated at <strong>the</strong> foot of <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> summit<br />

of which we observed those of <strong>the</strong><br />

pyramids <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood<br />

of Saccara that have <strong>the</strong> most elevated position One only<br />

of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

was entire; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y differed<br />

very essentially<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

figure<br />

from.<br />

those of Giza. We followed <strong>in</strong> a nor<strong>the</strong>rn direction <strong>the</strong> elbow of<br />

<strong>the</strong> canal, <strong>and</strong> were carried <strong>in</strong>to a large lake formed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>unda-<br />

tion, <strong>and</strong> extend<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> village of Saccara, near to which st<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> two pr<strong>in</strong>cipal pyramids, <strong>and</strong>, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir vic<strong>in</strong>ity, <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> of<br />
