SYRIA, EGYPT, GERMANY, &C. II5<br />

was produced, which we should have deemed <strong>in</strong>credible,<br />

if it had<br />

not constantly assailed our astonished ears.<br />

A Turkish camp, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> carcasses of horses, camels,<br />

asses, <strong>and</strong> mules, lay scattered <strong>in</strong> great abundance, must have fur-<br />

nished a high treat to <strong>the</strong> voracious jackals, who could not fail to<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>re whatever was requisite to appease <strong>the</strong>ir hunger. They<br />

<strong>in</strong>fest every part of <strong>Syria</strong>, where <strong>the</strong>y are very numerous. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> day <strong>the</strong>y conf<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>mselves to <strong>the</strong>ir holes <strong>and</strong> lurk<strong>in</strong>g places;<br />

but sally<br />

out at<br />

night,<br />

<strong>in</strong><br />

large bodies, <strong>in</strong> search of <strong>the</strong>ir food.<br />

They <strong>the</strong>n rendezvous <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood of <strong>the</strong> towns <strong>and</strong> villages,<br />

molest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants by <strong>the</strong> most disagreeable of all<br />

howl<strong>in</strong>gs. They feed with complacency on <strong>the</strong> most filthy <strong>and</strong><br />

odious substances; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

cruelty,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> warfare <strong>the</strong>y carry on<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st o<strong>the</strong>r animals, is equal to <strong>the</strong>ir rapacity.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 1st of October several discharges of musketry were heard<br />

close to our camp, <strong>and</strong> furnished a new evidence of <strong>the</strong> undisci-<br />

pl<strong>in</strong>ed state of <strong>the</strong> Turkish troops, who had been disput<strong>in</strong>g among<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>and</strong> had proceeded to extremities. This event, which<br />

happened so near to us, excited <strong>in</strong> us a considerable degree of ap-<br />

prehension, as well as of surprise.<br />

Nearly five hundred Amauts hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>desert</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong> camp<br />

on <strong>the</strong> 4th, <strong>the</strong> Vizier despatched <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir pursuit two thous<strong>and</strong><br />

Dehlis, who returned, however, without hav<strong>in</strong>g accomplished <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

object.<br />

In a Turkish army, <strong>the</strong> Dehlis, whose name implies desperadoes,<br />

or madmen, form a part of <strong>the</strong> light cavalry. They boast, not<br />

without reason, of <strong>the</strong>ir courage <strong>and</strong> temerity ; <strong>and</strong> are said to feel<br />

no hesitation <strong>in</strong> undertak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most dar<strong>in</strong>g enterprises. They are<br />

armed <strong>and</strong> equipped nearly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same manner as <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Turk-<br />

ish military, witli <strong>the</strong> exception, that <strong>the</strong>y wear a very high cap<br />

of a cyl<strong>in</strong>drical form, made of pasteboard, <strong>and</strong> covered ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with sheepsk<strong>in</strong> died of a black colour, or with black cloth. This<br />

cap is secured to <strong>the</strong> head by<br />

a coloured musl<strong>in</strong> or cotton h<strong>and</strong>-<br />

kerchief.<br />

About this time Lieutenant-colonel Holloway <strong>and</strong> Major ITope<br />

were respectively requested by <strong>the</strong> mikmendar attached to <strong>the</strong> mis^<br />

sion, to give orders to <strong>the</strong>ir men not to smoke <strong>in</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> tent of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier, lest <strong>the</strong>y should be <strong>in</strong>sulted by <strong>the</strong> Turkish military,<br />

contrary to whose custom this practice was. A caution founded<br />

on so prudential a motive, was, it may naturally be supposed,<br />

not neglected.
