On <strong>the</strong> French enter<strong>in</strong>g Jaffa, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possession of which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed dur<strong>in</strong>g forty days, it underwent a complete pillage, <strong>in</strong>somuch<br />

that <strong>the</strong> women <strong>and</strong> female children lost <strong>the</strong> few ornaments<br />

<strong>the</strong>y carried about <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>and</strong> with which <strong>the</strong>y decorated <strong>the</strong><br />

head, neck <strong>and</strong> ears. These ornaments were of various descrip-<br />

tions of co<strong>in</strong>s, such as paras, sequ<strong>in</strong>s, piastres, o;c. The gardens<br />

of Jaffa have been long celebrated; but s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> visit <strong>the</strong> French<br />

paid to that place, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> subsequent cantonement of <strong>the</strong> Turkish<br />

army <strong>in</strong> its vic<strong>in</strong>ity, <strong>the</strong>y have ceased, <strong>in</strong> a great measure, to pos-<br />

sess <strong>the</strong> beauties which rendered <strong>the</strong>m thus worthy of notice.<br />

While I am engaged <strong>in</strong> this description of <strong>the</strong> place, I am <strong>in</strong>du-<br />

ced to anticipate <strong>the</strong> order of <strong>the</strong> narrative by an observation, that<br />

Jaffa, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal depot for <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier's army, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> only port on <strong>the</strong> coast of <strong>Syria</strong> adapted to <strong>the</strong> important mili-<br />

tary service <strong>in</strong> which he was engaged, his Highness was, from<br />

<strong>the</strong>se considerations, anxious to give it every possible security. For<br />

this purpose plans were delivered to him by General Kceiiler, <strong>and</strong><br />

directions given to Lieutenant-colonel Jlollozuay, to carry <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>-<br />

to execution. They were accord<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong> a great measure comple-<br />

ted, when General Moore came to our encampment from <strong>the</strong> British<br />

army, under <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>and</strong> of Sir Ralph Abcrcrombie, with <strong>the</strong><br />

glad tid<strong>in</strong>gs of its arrival at Marmarice Bay.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 11th, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, I set out at sun-rise, <strong>in</strong> company<br />

with Signor Jjosari, physician to <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier, to ride through<br />

<strong>the</strong> Turkish encampment: after visit<strong>in</strong>g every part of which, we<br />

alighted at <strong>the</strong> tent of Mc/uuued Cashef, a Mameluke chief.<br />

We were <strong>the</strong>re enterta<strong>in</strong>ed with fruits, cheese, pipes, coffee, <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r refreshments. In <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g we went to a bath with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

camp, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> one which was frequented by <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier.<br />

On our enter<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmometer was at 86 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shade. We rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> apartment of <strong>the</strong> warm bath half an hour, <strong>and</strong> went<br />

through <strong>the</strong> usual discipl<strong>in</strong>e of scrubb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> wash<strong>in</strong>g. The heat<br />

was very agreeable,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmometer not<br />

ris<strong>in</strong>g higher than 104:<br />

my pulse beat 80 strokes <strong>in</strong> a m<strong>in</strong>ute, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> perspiration was by<br />

no means so profuse as on <strong>the</strong> former occasion, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bath of Constant<strong>in</strong>ople.<br />

On our return to <strong>the</strong> outer apartment, which consisted<br />

of a tent fitted up witli bedd<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r coaveniencies, we<br />

reposed ourselves for half an hour, dur<strong>in</strong>g which time we were furnished<br />

with pipes <strong>and</strong> coffee. We departed, highly .refreshed by<br />

our bath, for which we paid each two piastres <strong>and</strong> a half. It would<br />

appear by this recital, that (die Turks, even when <strong>in</strong> camp, do not
