From <strong>the</strong> forego<strong>in</strong>g statement <strong>and</strong> table it will be perceived, that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Nile rose, dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year 1801, about twenty-seven feet one<br />

<strong>in</strong>ch; <strong>and</strong> that it fell fifteen feet from <strong>the</strong> 8th October 1801, to<br />

<strong>the</strong> 14th February 1802, when I vas about to leave Cairo cm my<br />

way to Alex<strong>and</strong>ria, <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong>nce to Engl<strong>and</strong>. The mud deposited<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Nile on <strong>the</strong> surface of <strong>the</strong> country dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>un-<br />

dation, is of a blackish, or deep lead colour ; but, when dry, becomes<br />

of a lighter, or yellowish brown colour. It be<strong>in</strong>g composed<br />

of a<br />

large proportion of argillaceous earth, <strong>the</strong> surface of <strong>the</strong> coun-<br />

try forms itself <strong>in</strong>to deep cracks, or fissures, as it dries; I collected<br />

some of this mud for <strong>the</strong> purpose of future exam<strong>in</strong>ation, <strong>and</strong> shall,<br />

on its arrival, submit it to a careful analysis. A depth of from<br />

eight to ten <strong>in</strong>ches of this mud, <strong>the</strong> effect of <strong>the</strong> last <strong>in</strong>undation,<br />

was seen <strong>in</strong> several level places ; but this earthy matter contracts<br />

so much <strong>in</strong> dry<strong>in</strong>g, that <strong>the</strong> depth of new surface, when perfectly<br />
