boats filled with musicians, who played <strong>and</strong> sung dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

of <strong>the</strong> dav.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g, bonfires were k<strong>in</strong>dled, <strong>and</strong> pistols dis-<br />

charged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air; it was on <strong>the</strong> whole a scene of confusion.<br />

great<br />

riot <strong>and</strong><br />

On this occasion <strong>the</strong> Greek women were all of <strong>the</strong>m very h<strong>and</strong>somely<br />

attired, <strong>the</strong> meanest among <strong>the</strong>m, even <strong>the</strong> fishermens'<br />

wives, be<strong>in</strong>g clad <strong>in</strong> elegant dresses of silk or velvet, with pelices<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ed with erm<strong>in</strong>e of considerable value. This f<strong>in</strong>ery, of which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are extremely fond, is generally reserved for <strong>the</strong> holidays.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g been <strong>in</strong>disposed for several days, 1 did not repeat my visits<br />

to Levant Chiflick until <strong>the</strong> 8th. On <strong>the</strong> 10th, however, I was<br />

so well recovered as to accept <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vitation which we received from<br />

Monsieur Tomara, <strong>the</strong> Russian ambassador, to be present at <strong>the</strong><br />

celebration of <strong>the</strong> birth day of <strong>the</strong> Emperor of Russia.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g we repaired to his palace, where we found a very<br />

Jaro-e party assembled, all <strong>the</strong> foreign m<strong>in</strong>isters, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir gala dresses,<br />

<strong>and</strong> decorated with <strong>the</strong>ir respective orders, be<strong>in</strong>g present, with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

ladies <strong>and</strong> suites. The company, which consisted of <strong>in</strong>dividuals of<br />

almost everv nation, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> different costumes by which each is ap-<br />

propriately dist<strong>in</strong>guished, did not break up until between one <strong>and</strong><br />

two <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g. The dances were cont<strong>in</strong>ued until a late hour,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Greek women be<strong>in</strong>g passionately fond of that exerdse. In <strong>the</strong><br />

course of <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g refreshments, consist<strong>in</strong>g of sweetmeats, ice<br />

creams, cakes, &c. were served; <strong>and</strong> at midnight<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was a cold<br />

collation, with w<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r liquors. The enterta<strong>in</strong>ment passed<br />

off very agreeably.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 11th, 1 rode to Levant Chifiick; <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> 12th, to<br />

Constant<strong>in</strong>ople. I embraced this opportunity of pay<strong>in</strong>g a visit to<br />

<strong>the</strong> bazars, that is, <strong>the</strong> places set aside for <strong>the</strong> sale of different ar-<br />

ticles of merch<strong>and</strong>ize, each trade, or <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cases <strong>the</strong> dealers be-<br />

long<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> different nations subject to <strong>the</strong> Turkish dom<strong>in</strong>ation,<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g arranged under a covered archway, somewhat similar to our<br />

Exeter exchange. Beneath <strong>the</strong>se archways,<br />

or cloisters, which are<br />

of stone or wood, each tradesman, or dealer, has his shop <strong>in</strong> front,<br />

<strong>and</strong> beh<strong>in</strong>d it a warehouse for his goods. This arrangement is ex-<br />

tremely convenient both for <strong>the</strong> seller <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> purchaser<br />

same time that <strong>the</strong> bazars, admitt<strong>in</strong>g a free circulation of <strong>the</strong> air, are<br />

; at <strong>the</strong><br />

very cool <strong>in</strong> summer, <strong>and</strong> consequently well adapted to <strong>the</strong> climate.<br />

The commodities sold <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m are by no means contemptible.<br />

There is here a more regular market police (if <strong>the</strong> phrase may be<br />

admitted) than might be expected <strong>in</strong> this country.<br />
