TRAVELS IN A9IATIC TURKEY,<br />

comm<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g view of <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g country,<br />

which was decora-<br />

ted with <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>est scenery. As well as that through which w#<br />

had recently passed, it appeared to us like an earthly paradise, when<br />

contrasted with <strong>the</strong> barren <strong>and</strong> s<strong>and</strong>y hills <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity of Jaffa,<br />

to <strong>the</strong> cheerless aspect of which we had been accustomed for near-<br />

ly n<strong>in</strong>e months. The camp surrounded <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of an old vil-<br />

lage, called Mouta-moud, near to which were several groups of<br />

fig-trees, whose appearance announced <strong>the</strong>m to be nearly<br />

as old<br />

as <strong>the</strong> runious<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

with which <strong>the</strong>y were connected. The<br />

fertile pla<strong>in</strong>s which extended <strong>the</strong>mselves around us <strong>in</strong> every direction,<br />

afforded excellent pasture for cattle, <strong>and</strong> had received a new<br />

verdure from <strong>the</strong> late falls of ra<strong>in</strong>, by which <strong>the</strong> growth of <strong>the</strong><br />

corn had been also much forwarded. There was so<br />

great a scarci-<br />

ty of this essential object of consumption <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> camp, that <strong>the</strong><br />

Vizier was under <strong>the</strong><br />

necessity<br />

of<br />

alter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his plan, <strong>and</strong> of march-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g forward to Gaza <strong>the</strong> next morn<strong>in</strong>g. The unfortunate horses,<br />

who had .<br />

suffered so much from <strong>the</strong> fatigues of <strong>the</strong><br />

preced<strong>in</strong>g<br />

marches, were left without<br />

barley, <strong>and</strong> were almost <strong>in</strong> as de-<br />

plorable a condition as <strong>the</strong> camels, to whom <strong>the</strong> wet wea<strong>the</strong>r had<br />

been extremely unfavourable. The latter be<strong>in</strong>g accustomed to <strong>the</strong><br />

parch<strong>in</strong>g heats of <strong>the</strong> <strong>desert</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>re is an almost perpetu-<br />

al drought, subsist <strong>the</strong>re under circumstances which would subject<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r animals to perish through hunger <strong>and</strong> thirst. The climate of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>desert</strong>s, for which <strong>the</strong>y appear to have been formed, may<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore be considered as natural to <strong>the</strong>m ; but <strong>the</strong>y cannot endure<br />

moisture, however hardy <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r respects, <strong>and</strong> powerful <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> burdens with which <strong>the</strong>y are charged. That <strong>the</strong>ir free<br />

<strong>and</strong> docile nature is much abused, was manifested on <strong>the</strong> route to<br />

Esdad, <strong>the</strong> second day's march, when <strong>the</strong> roads were rendered almost<br />

impracticable by <strong>the</strong> torrents of ra<strong>in</strong> which poured down, <strong>and</strong><br />

when, as I have already stated, a very<br />

<strong>the</strong>se laborious <strong>and</strong> useful animals perished.<br />

considerable number of<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> greater part of <strong>the</strong> night <strong>the</strong> Turks were occupied<br />

<strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong>ir departure; <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> 15th at day-break <strong>the</strong><br />

camels were laden. Before we quitted <strong>the</strong> ground, 1 availed myself<br />

of <strong>the</strong> little leisure which was afforded me to make a short ex-<br />

cursion <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> adjacent country. I rode to <strong>the</strong> summit of a<br />

lofty<br />

hill, whence I saw to <strong>the</strong> north-east, at <strong>the</strong> distance of a mile <strong>and</strong><br />

a half from <strong>the</strong> camp, a populous village,<br />

<strong>the</strong> mosque of which<br />

was provided with a m<strong>in</strong>aret of considerable elevation. The buil-<br />

d<strong>in</strong>gs of Ascalon were not perceptible; but <strong>the</strong> olive-trees by
