CHAPTER I.<br />

Military mission appo<strong>in</strong>ted to proceed to <strong>Turkey</strong>. Object of <strong>the</strong> mission. Names<br />

of <strong>the</strong> officers ivho accompanied it. Departure of General Koehler over l<strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Author by sea. Their respective arrivals at Constant<strong>in</strong>ople. The<br />

ceremonies of consecrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vixier^s st<strong>and</strong>ard ; of <strong>the</strong> Capitan Pa-<br />

cha''s departure ; <strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Viziers tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> field.<br />

TOWARDS <strong>the</strong> close of <strong>the</strong> year 1793, a plan was formed<br />

by his Majesty's<br />

m<strong>in</strong>isters to send to <strong>the</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>ions of <strong>the</strong><br />

Gr<strong>and</strong> Seignor<br />

a British military mission, which was to proceed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> seat of war, <strong>and</strong> to co-operate with <strong>the</strong> Turks aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

common enemy, <strong>the</strong> French, who had by that time ga<strong>in</strong>ed a<br />

strong foot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Egypt</strong>. For this purpose General Koehler ,<br />

who had been at Constant<strong>in</strong>ople on a former occasion, was select-<br />

ed, toge<strong>the</strong>r with several officers belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> corps of royal<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>and</strong> royal artillery. These, with a certa<strong>in</strong> number of<br />

non-commissioned officers <strong>and</strong> privates belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> corps of<br />

artillery, <strong>and</strong> a few artificers, composed <strong>the</strong> above mission, con-<br />

sist<strong>in</strong>g altoge<strong>the</strong>r of seventy-six persons.<br />

The officers who were appo<strong>in</strong>ted on this occasion to act under<br />

General Koehler, were, Lieutenant Colonel Hollowatfi of <strong>the</strong> royal<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eers; Majors Hope <strong>and</strong> Lead, of <strong>the</strong> royal artillery ; Major<br />

Fletcher <strong>and</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong> Lacy, of <strong>the</strong> royal eng<strong>in</strong>eers ; <strong>and</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong><br />

Leake, of <strong>the</strong> royal artillery ; Capta<strong>in</strong> Frankl<strong>in</strong>, who was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

service of <strong>the</strong> Honourable East India Company,<br />
