for on <strong>the</strong> 23d, 1 purchased several bunches of violets <strong>and</strong> narcissus<br />

flowers, brought from that quarter. They were at that time<br />

sent <strong>in</strong><br />

great<br />

abundance from <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Asia</strong>tic territory<br />

to<br />

<strong>the</strong> capital; but were no where to be seen on <strong>the</strong> banks of <strong>the</strong> Bos-<br />

phorus.<br />

A few days prior to <strong>the</strong> last date of my narrative, an <strong>in</strong>cident<br />

occurred which term<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gular way. One of <strong>the</strong> men be-<br />

long<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> British mission was, without anv provocation on his<br />

side, assaulted by a Turk, who attempted to stab him with his<br />

yatikan. On a report of this outrage be<strong>in</strong>g made to <strong>the</strong> Capitan<br />

Pacha, to whose ret<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong> Turk belonged, he came to a resolution<br />

to have him decapitated,<br />

as an expiation of his offence. By<br />

<strong>the</strong> mediation <strong>and</strong> entreaties of Lord Elg<strong>in</strong>, a<br />

mitigation of <strong>the</strong><br />

punishment ensued : <strong>the</strong> Turk, after hav<strong>in</strong>g received fifty strokes<br />

of <strong>the</strong> bast<strong>in</strong>ado on <strong>the</strong> soles of his feet, was sentenced to twen-<br />

Intelligence vvas received on <strong>the</strong> 26th, that a formidable b<strong>and</strong> of<br />

from <strong>the</strong> capital, <strong>the</strong>y had ravaged with impunity.<br />

Similar b<strong>and</strong>s<br />

of Adrianople, <strong>and</strong> furnished a strik<strong>in</strong>g proof of <strong>the</strong> enfeebled state<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Turkish government, which permitted <strong>the</strong> high roads with-<br />

<strong>in</strong> a few leagues of <strong>the</strong> seat of <strong>the</strong> empire, to be beset to such a<br />

degree by <strong>the</strong>se hordes of b<strong>and</strong>itti, that travellers were at every<br />

step <strong>in</strong> imm<strong>in</strong>ent danger both of <strong>the</strong>ir lives <strong>and</strong> property.<br />

It was<br />

however reported, that <strong>the</strong> Levant Chijlick regiment was under<br />

orders to set out without delay for <strong>the</strong>ir dispersion.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 28th, fur<strong>the</strong>r accounts relative to <strong>the</strong> devastations of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se b<strong>and</strong>itti were brought to Constant<strong>in</strong>ople. It was reported<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y had burned several villages, <strong>and</strong> murdered such of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>-<br />

habitants as had not had time to betake <strong>the</strong>mselves to flight, tope-<br />

flight; <strong>and</strong> a letter from Ridoslo stated, that that place was crouded<br />

with people, who had come thi<strong>the</strong>r for shelter, or to procure<br />

boats to facilitate <strong>the</strong>ir escape from <strong>the</strong>se ferocious b<strong>and</strong>s. The <strong>in</strong>-<br />

habitants of Ridosto were employed <strong>in</strong> digg<strong>in</strong>g a ditch round <strong>the</strong><br />

town, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> contriv<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r means of defence, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> daily<br />
