A sham attack be<strong>in</strong>g made on <strong>the</strong>m, a heavy fir<strong>in</strong>g of musketry <strong>and</strong><br />

pistols, discharged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air, was kept up, <strong>the</strong> balls with which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were charged fly<strong>in</strong>g, as usual, <strong>in</strong> every direction.<br />

Anions <strong>the</strong> new levies which were daily pour<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> Turk-<br />

ish camp, were several <strong>in</strong>dividuals who had suffered an amputation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> nose. This be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> punishment <strong>in</strong>flicted by Djezzar Pacha<br />

at Acre, pla<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>dicated whence <strong>the</strong>y came.<br />

A Pacha, with a corps of about four hundred men, arrived <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

camp on <strong>the</strong> 16th. The mission about this time suffered great <strong>in</strong>convenience<br />

from <strong>the</strong> difficulty of procur<strong>in</strong>g a necessary supply of<br />

provisions.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 20th, Capta<strong>in</strong> Leake was ordered to hold himself <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

to proceed<br />

with despatches to <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>in</strong> chief: <strong>and</strong><br />

on <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g day <strong>the</strong> janissaries, with ano<strong>the</strong>r party of troops,<br />

marched from <strong>the</strong> camp, on <strong>the</strong>ir way to Yebna— a sufficient <strong>in</strong>dication<br />

that <strong>the</strong> active military operations were on <strong>the</strong> eve of com-<br />

menc<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Several o<strong>the</strong>r detachments quitted <strong>the</strong> encampment on <strong>the</strong> 23d ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> we were ordered to hold ourselves <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>ess for <strong>the</strong> 23th <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, beyond which time <strong>the</strong> marc!) of <strong>the</strong> Vizier, with <strong>the</strong><br />

rema<strong>in</strong>der of his armv, was not to be delayed.<br />

A general idea of <strong>the</strong> climate of <strong>Syria</strong> may be formed from <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g paniculars r— Dur<strong>in</strong>g our stay <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmometer,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> months of July, August, <strong>and</strong> September, marked <strong>the</strong> highest,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon, from n<strong>in</strong>ety-three to n<strong>in</strong>ety-five degrees of
