SYRIA, EGYPT, GERMANY, &C. I 59<br />

air, which, bestow<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> arid hills some slight degree of verdure,<br />

rendered <strong>the</strong> aspect of <strong>the</strong> country more cheerful.<br />

<strong>Syria</strong> may <strong>in</strong> general be considered as 3 mounta<strong>in</strong>ous country;<br />

but <strong>the</strong> part border<strong>in</strong>g on Jaffa has several<br />

very<br />

extensive pla<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

which are <strong>in</strong>tersected, at certa<strong>in</strong> distances, with moderate heights.<br />

In approach<strong>in</strong>g Jerusalem, after side of Ramia,<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g proceeded to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s are very lofty, <strong>and</strong>, hav<strong>in</strong>g but a<br />

slender superficies<br />

of earth to cover <strong>the</strong>ir rocky prom<strong>in</strong>ences, are<br />

exclusively adapted to <strong>the</strong> cultivation of olive-trees, which take root<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir very clefts, <strong>and</strong> hide <strong>the</strong> naked appearance <strong>the</strong>y would<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise exhibit.<br />

In general <strong>the</strong> country is but th<strong>in</strong>ly covered with trees, <strong>and</strong><br />

has few woods, or thickets. In <strong>the</strong> parts where <strong>the</strong>re is no tex-<br />

ture of soil, but merely a white loose s<strong>and</strong>, not a tree nor shrub is<br />

to be seen.<br />

To <strong>the</strong> north side of Jaffa, a small river, which empties itself<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> sea, presents<br />

itself at <strong>the</strong> distance of two or three miles.<br />

It is <strong>the</strong> only one which I met with <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Syria</strong> ; it is probable, how-<br />

ever, that o<strong>the</strong>rs may have been formed, subsequently<br />

to <strong>the</strong> excursions<br />

I made <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior, by <strong>the</strong> abundant falls of ra<strong>in</strong> I have'<br />

had occasion to notice.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation I was able to collect, as well as from my<br />

own personal observation, I could not learn that ei<strong>the</strong>r m<strong>in</strong>es or<br />

eruptions of volcanic matter are to be met with <strong>in</strong> <strong>Syria</strong>.<br />

The soil <strong>in</strong> many parts, <strong>in</strong> those more especially border<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>desert</strong>s, consists almost exclusively of a f<strong>in</strong>e white s<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> reflec-<br />

tion from which is extremely pa<strong>in</strong>ful to <strong>the</strong> sight. This barren<br />

territory extends, to <strong>the</strong> northward, beyond Jaffa. It conta<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

however, <strong>in</strong> common with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>Syria</strong>, several fer-<br />

tile spots, covered with a rich black mould, which very copiously<br />

repay <strong>the</strong> labour bestowed on <strong>the</strong>m. On <strong>the</strong> rocky grounds an<br />

<strong>in</strong>considerable portion of calcareous earth is found blended with<br />

marl.<br />

Wherever <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> is susceptible of cultivation, <strong>and</strong> has not<br />

been neglected, it affords abundant crops of wheat, barley,. Indian<br />

corn (dourra), tobacco, cotton, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r productions. Fruits <strong>and</strong><br />

vegetables are <strong>in</strong> equal abundance. Among <strong>the</strong> former are pome-<br />

granates, figs, oranges, lemons, citrons of an uncommonly large<br />

size, melons, grapes, <strong>and</strong> olives. The melons are large,<br />

<strong>and</strong> have<br />

a delicious flavour; as have also <strong>the</strong> grapes, of which we partook<br />

so late as <strong>the</strong> month of December, when we found <strong>the</strong>v still re-
