108 TRAVELS IN ASIATIC TURKEY,<br />

ca l<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> sent<strong>in</strong>el, we found, after a little search, that our<br />

unseasonable visiter was a poor <strong>in</strong>sane Turk, who had been pur-<br />

sut u by one of his countrymen from <strong>the</strong> camp, <strong>and</strong> had sought re-<br />

<strong>in</strong><br />

fuge<br />

<strong>the</strong> tent.<br />

Monsieur FraiicMni died on <strong>the</strong> 15th at<br />

night. He had been<br />

sent by <strong>the</strong> Russian m<strong>in</strong>ister at Constant<strong>in</strong>ople as an agent to keep<br />

up a communication with <strong>the</strong> Turkish m<strong>in</strong>isters <strong>in</strong> camp, <strong>and</strong> to<br />

give an account of <strong>the</strong> military operations. He had caught <strong>the</strong><br />

pestilential <strong>in</strong>fection from two domestics belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Vizier's<br />

new dragoman, who were recently arrived from Constant<strong>in</strong>ople,<br />

, <strong>and</strong> both of whom had fallen victims to <strong>the</strong> disease. Monsieur<br />

Franch<strong>in</strong>i languished six days after <strong>the</strong> attack.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 17th two hundred janissaries arrived <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> camp from Constant<strong>in</strong>ople. In mak<strong>in</strong>g an excursion towards<br />

Gaza <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon, I met with <strong>the</strong> body of an unfortunate man,<br />

who had just been assass<strong>in</strong>ated. He had received two strokes of a<br />

•sabre, one of which had nearly severed <strong>the</strong> head from <strong>the</strong> body.<br />

His turban had been carried off; but <strong>the</strong> stick which lay beh<strong>in</strong>d,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> style of his dress, po<strong>in</strong>ted him out as a w<strong>and</strong>er<strong>in</strong>g Arab.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 18th <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, General Koehler <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> officers<br />

went to a pla<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity of <strong>the</strong> encampment, to be present<br />

at a review of <strong>the</strong> Turkish troops by his Highness <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vis<br />

zier.<br />

Adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to his own tent, which, be<strong>in</strong>g fitted up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

oriental, or Persian style, far exceeded, <strong>in</strong> richness <strong>and</strong> magnificence,<br />

any th<strong>in</strong>g we had seen before, a tent was prepared for our<br />

reception. The <strong>in</strong>fantry <strong>and</strong> artillery were drawn up <strong>in</strong> three bo-<br />

dies, that is, a ma<strong>in</strong> body <strong>and</strong> two w<strong>in</strong>gs, nearly <strong>in</strong> a l<strong>in</strong>e, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> guns <strong>in</strong> front. While <strong>the</strong> whole advanced slowly, a fir<strong>in</strong>g was<br />

kept up exclusively by <strong>the</strong> artillery; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> movement hav<strong>in</strong>g been<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued for <strong>the</strong> space of six or seven hundred yards, <strong>the</strong> troops<br />

faced to <strong>the</strong> right about, when, <strong>the</strong> guns be<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong> brought to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir front, <strong>the</strong>y returned to <strong>the</strong>ir former ground, fir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

manner as when <strong>the</strong>y advanced. This absurd manoeuvre was <strong>the</strong><br />

only one <strong>the</strong>y displayed. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole of <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fantry<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed with <strong>the</strong>ir arms shouldered, <strong>the</strong> Amends or Albanians<br />

shout<strong>in</strong>g. In return<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier was mounted on a<br />

f<strong>in</strong>e Arabian horse, richly caparisoned. His Highness was ele-<br />

gantly dressed, as were also his pr<strong>in</strong>cipal officers <strong>and</strong> attendants.<br />

"We were <strong>in</strong>vited to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cavalcade, on its way back to <strong>the</strong><br />

encampment.
