haze, <strong>the</strong> bold <strong>and</strong> lofty mounta<strong>in</strong>s of C<strong>and</strong>ia, covered with snow,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with a town <strong>and</strong> small fort. At sun set <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d shifted<br />

to <strong>the</strong> westward, <strong>and</strong> we bore away to <strong>the</strong> north-east. In <strong>the</strong><br />

night it became contrary, accompanied by a rough sea.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g it impossible, on <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 1st of April, to<br />

clear <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, we tacked <strong>and</strong> stood <strong>the</strong> same course as on <strong>the</strong><br />

preced<strong>in</strong>g day,<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> western coast. At noon <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d ha-<br />

v<strong>in</strong>g shifted to <strong>the</strong> westward, we bore up for <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> afternoon<br />

we had a heavy gale from <strong>the</strong> north-east, which carried us<br />

considerably to <strong>the</strong> westward.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> f2d, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, we bore away with a north-west<br />

w<strong>in</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> eastward, with a view to clear <strong>the</strong> eastern po<strong>in</strong>t of <strong>the</strong><br />

isl<strong>and</strong>, abreast of which we found ourselves at one o'clock P. M.<br />

At this time <strong>the</strong> gale <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong> violence, with heavy showers of<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 3d we were driven to <strong>the</strong> eastward bv a strong gale from<br />

<strong>the</strong> north-west, <strong>the</strong> force of which was augmented to such a de-<br />

gree <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g, that <strong>the</strong> waves beat over our vessel with an<br />

impetuous fury, threaten<strong>in</strong>g every moment to plunge us <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dreadful abvss, In this perilous situation, drift<strong>in</strong>g under our bare<br />

poles, we cont<strong>in</strong>ued until <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g morn<strong>in</strong>g at day-break,<br />

when <strong>the</strong> storm abated gradually, <strong>and</strong> we once more made sail.<br />

We shortly after descried l<strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> eastward of us, <strong>and</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

steered <strong>in</strong> that direction, with a favourable breeze, came to anchor<br />

at two <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bay of <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> of Castel Rosso,<br />

on <strong>the</strong> coast of <strong>Asia</strong> M<strong>in</strong>or, to our great satisfaction <strong>and</strong> content,<br />

after <strong>the</strong> repeated <strong>and</strong> violent gales we had had to encounter s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

our departure from yllcx<strong>and</strong>ria, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> imm<strong>in</strong>ent peril to which<br />

we had been exposed by that of <strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g day.<br />

Almost immediately after our arrival, I l<strong>and</strong>ed at <strong>the</strong> town of<br />

Castel Rosso, <strong>the</strong> ancient Cistene, situated at <strong>the</strong> extremity<br />

of <strong>the</strong><br />

bay, on a solid rock, <strong>and</strong> built <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of a crescenr. The<br />

isl<strong>and</strong> consists<br />

entirely<br />

of rocks, from which <strong>the</strong> materials have<br />

been drawn for <strong>the</strong> construction of <strong>the</strong> houses. 7 he entrance <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> bay is f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> romantic. In <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>and</strong> more elevated part<br />

of <strong>the</strong> town <strong>the</strong>re is a castle, on which several guns are mounted.<br />

The isl<strong>and</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g formerly belonged to <strong>the</strong> Venetians, <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

built this castle, <strong>and</strong> taken some pa<strong>in</strong>s to fortify <strong>the</strong> rock : <strong>the</strong> for-<br />

mer has, s<strong>in</strong>ce that time, been rebuilt by <strong>the</strong> Turks. The <strong>in</strong>habi-<br />

tants are for <strong>the</strong> greater part Greeks, with a few Turks. There<br />

are scarcely any productions on <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, on <strong>the</strong> rocky surface oi
