want of vital energy. The w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> laudanum were repeated,<br />

fomentations were applied to <strong>the</strong> legs, <strong>and</strong> calomel cont<strong>in</strong>ued at<br />

bed-time.<br />

Sept. 25. He appeared somewhat relieved; <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> moderately<br />

warm; pulse more firm <strong>and</strong> steady: he reta<strong>in</strong>ed chicken broth upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> stomach: <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> laudanum repeated, with a dose of<br />

vitriolic ae<strong>the</strong>r, jo<strong>in</strong>ed with laudanum,<br />

at bed-time.<br />

Sept. 26. Passed a restless night, with delirium ; tongue, foul ;<br />

had stools; ur<strong>in</strong>e nearly of a healthy colour; when spoken to, he<br />

roused himself, spoke, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n fell <strong>in</strong>to a drowsy, comatose state,<br />

with mutter<strong>in</strong>g delirium; <strong>the</strong> eyes were turgid; pulse quick, more<br />

full <strong>and</strong> firm than <strong>the</strong> 25th (112 strokes <strong>in</strong> a m<strong>in</strong>ute) ;<br />

sk<strong>in</strong> warm :<br />

it was only to-day that a general reaction of system appeared stea-<br />

dy ; <strong>the</strong> head was shaved; cloths moistened with v<strong>in</strong>egar were fre-<br />

quently applied; <strong>and</strong> a blister laid to <strong>the</strong> nape of <strong>the</strong> neck.<br />

A drachm <strong>and</strong> a half of nitrous acid, diluted<br />

freely<br />

with water,<br />

was ordered to be given with<strong>in</strong> twenty-four hours. The ae<strong>the</strong>r<br />

anodyne draught repeated.<br />

Sept. 27. Delirium cont<strong>in</strong>ued; a<br />

general coldness pervaded <strong>the</strong><br />

whole body; sk<strong>in</strong> moist; passed loose stools <strong>and</strong> ur<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>volunta-<br />

rily ; pulse quick <strong>and</strong> small (120), <strong>and</strong> very variable; tongue moist,<br />

<strong>and</strong> less foul ; had occasional nausea ; several large dark spots, <strong>and</strong><br />

petechias upon <strong>the</strong> breast ; fomentations were applied to <strong>the</strong> legs<br />

<strong>and</strong> arms ; w<strong>in</strong>e, bark, <strong>and</strong> nitrous acid cont<strong>in</strong>ued; a blister, co-<br />

ver<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole »of <strong>the</strong> head, was applied. He expired <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

even<strong>in</strong>g. He had nei<strong>the</strong>r gl<strong>and</strong>ular nor o<strong>the</strong>r tumors. The body<br />

became extremely offensive a few hours after death. These fatal<br />

cases occurr<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> observ<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> same fever prevailed with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Turks, we took every possible precaution, by fumigation, &c.<br />

to prevent <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uance of disease, <strong>and</strong> recommended a change<br />

of situation.<br />

CASE IV.<br />

A military artificer, Geary, about twenty-five years of age,<br />

while encamped at Jaffa, <strong>in</strong> <strong>Syria</strong>, was suddenly seized, on <strong>the</strong><br />

5th December 1800, with cold rigors, vertigo, head-ach, fol-<br />

lowed by a hot sk<strong>in</strong>, pa<strong>in</strong> at stomach, with nausea, <strong>and</strong> ill taste of<br />

<strong>the</strong> mouth. He had general pa<strong>in</strong>s all over his body, <strong>and</strong> was lan-<br />

guid, with a quick, though ra<strong>the</strong>r firm pulse (100). An emetic<br />

removed much bile from <strong>the</strong> stomach, <strong>and</strong> several loose stools were
