SYRIA, EGYPT, GERMANY, &C. l6l<br />

la<strong>in</strong>ous territory, where a scanty superficies of soil, spread over <strong>the</strong><br />

rocks, affords a feeble hope of pasturage.<br />

The animal fooxl of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Syria</strong>ns consists pr<strong>in</strong>cipally of mutton<br />

<strong>and</strong> goat's, flesh, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y consume but a very small proportion of<br />

beef, <strong>and</strong> no veal. They are, <strong>in</strong>deed, very spar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir use of<br />

flesh, chiefly conf<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir diet to <strong>the</strong> vegetable productions<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have <strong>in</strong> such great abundance, <strong>and</strong> of such excel-<br />

lent qualities.<br />

The horses are small, but fleet, <strong>and</strong> very sure footed. In <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

choice of <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Turkish <strong>in</strong>habitants attach <strong>the</strong>mselves ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

to <strong>the</strong> figure <strong>and</strong> showy appearance of <strong>the</strong> beast, than to his fleet-<br />

ness <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r useful qualities. Dur<strong>in</strong>g our stay <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, a<br />

good horse brought from four to five hundred piastres, that is, from<br />

thirty to nearly forty pounds English.<br />

The mules are very numerous, <strong>and</strong> of a large breed. This remark<br />

also applies to <strong>the</strong> asses ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter are much more swift<br />

of pace than those of Engl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

As a beast of burden, <strong>the</strong> camel has a remarkable pre-em<strong>in</strong>ence<br />

<strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t of utility. The <strong>in</strong>habitants be<strong>in</strong>g destitute of for<br />

carriages<br />

<strong>the</strong> conveyance<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir merch<strong>and</strong>ise from place to place, such<br />

vehicles be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>compatible with <strong>the</strong> state of <strong>the</strong> roads <strong>and</strong> Country,<br />

have necessarily recourse* to this animal, to perform <strong>the</strong> labours to<br />

which <strong>the</strong> mule, from his comparatively<br />

dim<strong>in</strong>utive stature, cannot<br />

be subjected. This is not <strong>the</strong> only advantage<br />

which has resulted to<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Syria</strong>ns, from <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong>y have bestowed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> propagation<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir race of camels, whose patient endurance of fatigues is only<br />

to be equalled by <strong>the</strong> parsimonious support which <strong>the</strong>ir nature re-<br />

quires. In cross<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>desert</strong>s, or <strong>in</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r tedious<br />

<strong>and</strong> laborious journies where water cannot be procured, <strong>the</strong>y pass<br />

several days <strong>in</strong> succession without allay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir thirst; <strong>and</strong> make<br />

a hard <strong>and</strong> scantv meal on <strong>the</strong> shrubs <strong>and</strong> bushes <strong>the</strong>y may chance<br />

to encounter on <strong>the</strong>ir wav, without subject<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir masters to <strong>the</strong><br />

necessity of load<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>in</strong> addition to <strong>the</strong>ir o<strong>the</strong>r burdens, with<br />

provender for <strong>the</strong>ir support. A smaller <strong>and</strong> more slender species<br />

of<br />

<strong>the</strong> camel, called hedg<strong>in</strong>, is mounted by <strong>the</strong> natives <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>and</strong><br />

is capable of mak<strong>in</strong>g a greater progress, on a long journey, than<br />

a horse. It requires some habit to be reconciled to its motion,<br />

which is, however, not so fatigu<strong>in</strong>g as might be supposed from<br />

.'he appearance of <strong>the</strong> animal, for its pace be<strong>in</strong>g by long <strong>and</strong> re^u-<br />
