176 TRAVELS IN ASIATIC TURKEY,<br />

as nearly as <strong>the</strong>y can, <strong>the</strong> Spartans, from whom <strong>the</strong>y suppose<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves descended, <strong>and</strong> whose fierce <strong>and</strong> martial air <strong>the</strong>y appear<br />

to have reta<strong>in</strong>ed. The head is shaved, except on <strong>the</strong> middle, or<br />

crown, whence a tuft of hair descends, <strong>and</strong> flows loosely down <strong>the</strong><br />

back. Over <strong>the</strong> head is a red skull-cap, which descends low down<br />

on <strong>the</strong> forehead. In general <strong>the</strong>ir appearance<br />

are<br />

very negligent <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

slovenly<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir<br />

persons.<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicates that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

On a long march,<br />

<strong>and</strong> after a considerable absence from <strong>the</strong>ir homes, <strong>the</strong>y are often<br />

exposed to <strong>the</strong> greatest misery <strong>and</strong> distress, of which <strong>in</strong>deed we<br />

were ourselves, on several occasions, witnesses. Amidst <strong>the</strong> vices<br />

<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>dulge, that of gambl<strong>in</strong>g is carried to so great an<br />

excess, that when <strong>the</strong>y have lost at cards <strong>the</strong> little money <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir possession, <strong>the</strong>y frequently stake <strong>the</strong>ir fire-arms, <strong>and</strong> every<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r description of property. They are great marauders, plunder-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g whatever <strong>the</strong>y can lav <strong>the</strong>ir h<strong>and</strong>s on; <strong>and</strong> so unruly <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>-<br />

temperate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir passions, which <strong>the</strong>y cannot govern, that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

frequently commit assass<strong>in</strong>ations among one ano<strong>the</strong>r. They speak<br />

a language peculiar to <strong>the</strong>mselves, said to have been h<strong>and</strong>ed down<br />

to <strong>the</strong>m by <strong>the</strong> ancient lllyrians.<br />

Their arms consist of a pair of pistols worn <strong>in</strong> a sash, with a long<br />

h<strong>and</strong>jar knife, or dagger, <strong>and</strong> a musket with a long barrel. Their<br />

pistols <strong>and</strong> muskets are usually mounted <strong>in</strong> silver, <strong>and</strong> much ornamented.<br />

They are without knapsacks, for which, <strong>in</strong> truth, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

have not <strong>the</strong> smallest occasion. The mode <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y are tra<strong>in</strong>-<br />

ed from <strong>the</strong>ir youth renders <strong>the</strong>m excellent marksmen.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Turkish cavalry, as well as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> service of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fantry,<br />

<strong>the</strong> soldier provides himself with <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>the</strong> most agreeable to his<br />

fancy. Frequently, however, <strong>the</strong> horsemen carry pikes <strong>and</strong> javel<strong>in</strong>s<br />

of different lengths, of which <strong>the</strong> shorter ones are girted on<br />

<strong>and</strong> secured to <strong>the</strong> saddle. Some of <strong>the</strong>se weapons are six feet or<br />

more <strong>in</strong> length, with an iron po<strong>in</strong>t, or ferrule, nearly a foot long,<br />

to <strong>the</strong> bottom of which is attached a tassel made of fea<strong>the</strong>rs, or<br />

hair. Hay<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g up to discipl<strong>in</strong>e, made <strong>the</strong> djerid exer-<br />

cise a pr<strong>in</strong>cipal pursuit <strong>and</strong> chief amusement, <strong>the</strong>y lance <strong>the</strong> jave-<br />

l<strong>in</strong> with great force <strong>and</strong> dexterity. They likewise carry battle-axes,<br />

<strong>and</strong> maces, or clubs, with sabres, <strong>and</strong>, <strong>in</strong> some cases, carab<strong>in</strong>es,<br />

or rifle-barrel muskets. It seldom happens that bayonets are em-<br />

ployed by <strong>the</strong> Turkish soldiery; but among <strong>the</strong> cavalry, two, or<br />

even a greater number of pistols, ornamented with a silver mount-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g, are placed with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sash, or girdle.
