of discover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> various <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>and</strong> capacities by <strong>the</strong> struc-<br />

ture of <strong>the</strong> skull, <strong>and</strong> by its elevations <strong>and</strong> depressions. In do<strong>in</strong>g<br />

this, he dwelt on <strong>the</strong> important truths <strong>and</strong> conclusions which would<br />

result from <strong>the</strong> establishment of such a doctr<strong>in</strong>e, to <strong>the</strong> manifest<br />

advantage of medic<strong>in</strong>e, morals, education, legislation, &c. toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with <strong>the</strong> promotion of a more perfect knowledge of mank<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>in</strong> general.<br />

In lay<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples which he was desirous<br />

to apply to future observations, he advanced, first, that capacities<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ations are <strong>in</strong>nate <strong>in</strong> man <strong>and</strong> brutes: secondly, that <strong>the</strong>se<br />

capacities <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ations are seated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>: <strong>and</strong> lastly, that<br />

both <strong>the</strong> capacities <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ations be<strong>in</strong>g essentially different from<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent of each othrer, <strong>the</strong>y must consequently orig<strong>in</strong>ate<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 26th I visited <strong>the</strong> hospital of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sane, called la Toi^r<br />

des Four, at Rossau. In this lofty <strong>and</strong> capacious build<strong>in</strong>g between<br />

two <strong>and</strong> three hundred persons of both sexes are conf<strong>in</strong>ed, <strong>in</strong> apartments<br />

kept <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nicest order. An anecdote is recorded of <strong>the</strong><br />

Emperor Joseph <strong>the</strong> second, that hav<strong>in</strong>g caused an apartment to be<br />

fitted up for himself at <strong>the</strong> top of this tower, or<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

to<br />

enjoy<br />

<strong>the</strong> advantage of a f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> extensive prospect, one of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>mates<br />

attacked him <strong>in</strong> a sarcastic epigram, <strong>in</strong>scribed on <strong>the</strong> wall. It is well<br />

known that this Emperor <strong>in</strong>dulged <strong>in</strong> many extraord<strong>in</strong>ary fancies<br />

<strong>and</strong> wild speculations; <strong>and</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>the</strong> attack was couched <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g words, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of an epitaph :—" Uicjacet Jo-<br />

" sephus Secundus, hie primus, ubiaue secundus. ,y<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 2Tth I visited <strong>the</strong> imperial palace at Scombrun, a very<br />

superb build<strong>in</strong>g, st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a delightful situation, <strong>and</strong> embellished<br />

by beautiful walks, gardens, founta<strong>in</strong>s, statues, grottoes, <strong>and</strong> pleasure-grounds,<br />

all open to <strong>the</strong> public. I was conducted to <strong>the</strong> menagerie,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>nce to <strong>the</strong> observatory, which affords a f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong><br />

extensive view of Vienna <strong>and</strong> its environs. On my way to Scombrun<br />

\ entered a church at <strong>the</strong><br />

village of Herrals, where I was<br />

shewn <strong>the</strong> model of <strong>the</strong> sepulchre of our Saviour at Jerusalem,<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r curiosities of a similar k<strong>in</strong>d. Hav<strong>in</strong>g seen <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

sepulchre,<br />

was destitute of all resemblance.<br />

it was not difficult for me to ascerta<strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong> model<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g d<strong>in</strong>ed at Schombrun, I made an excursion to Dornbach,<br />

a very agreeable <strong>and</strong> rural seat, which had been <strong>the</strong> residence of <strong>the</strong><br />

late Field-marshal . Lacy It was open to <strong>the</strong> public,<br />
