SYRIA, EGYPT, GERMANY, &C. 245<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>estimable relics <strong>the</strong>y conta<strong>in</strong>ed, we took a survey<br />

of <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g country from <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> of mummies, which is<br />

situated on an elevated <strong>and</strong> rocky hill, <strong>and</strong> overspread with a con-<br />

siderable number of pits. On its surface, which is covered with a<br />

light s<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> fragments of bones, of wooden coff<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> bits of<br />

<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>en which had served as an envelope to <strong>the</strong> mummies, with<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r substances drawn from <strong>the</strong> pits, lay profusely scattered. We<br />

had from this position a very extensive view of <strong>the</strong> Nile <strong>in</strong> its dif-<br />

ferent w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> ramifications, as well as of <strong>the</strong> large tracts of<br />

country<br />

it had <strong>in</strong>undated.<br />

In return<strong>in</strong>g to our germ a great variety of curious <strong>Egypt</strong>ian<br />

idols, which it was anciently <strong>the</strong> custom to deposit with <strong>the</strong> mum-<br />

mies, were tendered to us for sale. We purchased a part of <strong>the</strong>m;<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bedou<strong>in</strong> Arabs, who had acted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> capacitv of guards,<br />

<strong>and</strong> had also been our guides <strong>in</strong> descend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> pits, made us a<br />

present of a gazelle, or antelope.<br />

The sheick whom I have already mentioned had prepared a d<strong>in</strong>-<br />

ner for us, of which we partook on our enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> germ, <strong>and</strong><br />

hoisted sail, at four <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon, on our return to Cairo, after<br />

a very agreeable, but at <strong>the</strong> same time fatigu<strong>in</strong>g, excursion.<br />

The arrangement which we concerted was to l<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at Sheick Atman, <strong>and</strong>, hav<strong>in</strong>g passed <strong>the</strong> night <strong>the</strong>re, to set out<br />

early on <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g morn<strong>in</strong>g for Cairo. In pursu<strong>in</strong>g our route,<br />

<strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d freshened, <strong>and</strong> at length blew a strong gale from <strong>the</strong><br />

northward, hy which a high surf was thrown up. This <strong>in</strong>duced<br />

our boatmen to take <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sail, <strong>and</strong> betake <strong>the</strong>mselves to <strong>the</strong>ir oars,<br />

<strong>in</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g which <strong>the</strong>y manifested great prudence, <strong>the</strong> germ be<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

description of vessel very easy to overset, <strong>in</strong> consequence<br />

of <strong>the</strong><br />

great spread of canvass with which it is provided. At n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

even<strong>in</strong>g we reached <strong>the</strong> spot where we had agreed to l<strong>and</strong> ; <strong>and</strong> on<br />

proceed<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> village, found <strong>the</strong> same its gaiety among <strong>in</strong>habi-<br />

tants, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> same amusements as we had witnessed <strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g<br />

even<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

A tire hav<strong>in</strong>g been k<strong>in</strong>dled, we refreshed ourselves witii a cup of<br />

tea, <strong>and</strong> afterwards reposed until midnight, when <strong>the</strong> sail was<br />

hoisted, <strong>the</strong> violence of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d be<strong>in</strong>g considerably abated. After<br />

a sail of a few hours, we reached <strong>the</strong> canal of <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ce of <strong>the</strong><br />

Faithful; <strong>and</strong> by four <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g found ourselves <strong>in</strong> our lod<br />

g<strong>in</strong>gs at Cairo.
