ON OPHTHALMIA.<br />

speedily effected a cure. But <strong>in</strong> neglected, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> obst<strong>in</strong>ate casei,<br />

opacities of <strong>the</strong> cornea frequently ensued, which reduced die patient<br />

to a temporary, partial, qr absolute bl<strong>in</strong>dness. Some melan-<br />

choly cases happened, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> eye completely suppurated, <strong>and</strong><br />

wasted away. In recent opacities, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>and</strong> laudanum<br />

were verv useful, Although<br />

I found <strong>the</strong>se remedies <strong>the</strong> most effi-<br />

cacious <strong>in</strong> remov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> disease, yet I could not employ <strong>the</strong>m very<br />

generally among <strong>the</strong> Ottomans, who do not comprehend <strong>the</strong> utilitv<br />

of remedies which give pa<strong>in</strong>. It is true that <strong>the</strong>re were exceptions<br />

to this remark among such of <strong>the</strong> Turks as enterta<strong>in</strong>ed fewer<br />

prejudices, <strong>and</strong> who, possess<strong>in</strong>g a greater degree of confidence, submitted<br />

to <strong>the</strong> stimulants, <strong>and</strong> profited by <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

The collyrjum, composed of <strong>the</strong> acetite of lead, water <strong>and</strong> vi-<br />

negar, alone cured great numbers of <strong>the</strong> Ottomans : <strong>in</strong>deed, this<br />

wash became so celebrated among <strong>the</strong>m, that I was obliged to<br />

furnish <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpreter of <strong>the</strong> Vizier with a quantity of <strong>the</strong> acetite<br />

of lead, with directions to make <strong>the</strong> collyrium for <strong>the</strong> use of his<br />

Highness <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, on <strong>the</strong>ir return to<br />

Constant<strong>in</strong>ople from Cairo.<br />

In <strong>the</strong><br />

early part of my practice I hesitated to apply <strong>the</strong> stimulants<br />

until <strong>the</strong> primary symptoms were sensibly alleviated ; after three,<br />

four, 01 six days, when observ<strong>in</strong>g a peculiar fulness <strong>and</strong> relaxed<br />

state of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal membrane of <strong>the</strong> eye-lids, from <strong>the</strong> distended<br />

state of <strong>the</strong> vessels, <strong>and</strong> which was <strong>in</strong> many cases accompanied with<br />

small ulcerations of <strong>the</strong> tarsi, this condition of <strong>the</strong> parts constitut<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> secondary stage of <strong>the</strong> disease, <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>and</strong> prompted me to<br />

apply stimulants earlier, <strong>and</strong> with much benefit.<br />

A gap<strong>in</strong>g, or an <strong>in</strong>version of <strong>the</strong> eye-lids, occasionally occurred<br />

<strong>in</strong> some violent, tedious, <strong>and</strong> obst<strong>in</strong>ate cases of ophthalmy, pro-<br />

duc<strong>in</strong>g deformity, <strong>and</strong> a temporary deprivation of sight, from, <strong>the</strong><br />

great relaxation <strong>and</strong> elongation of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal surface of <strong>the</strong> pal-<br />

pebra. The most remarkable case of it which I saw, happened<br />

to a soldier at Gaza, belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Indian army. The <strong>in</strong>ter-<br />

nal membrane of <strong>the</strong> upper' lid formed a flap of at least two-thirds<br />

of an <strong>in</strong>ch <strong>in</strong> depth, hang<strong>in</strong>g down, <strong>and</strong> completely clos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

eye. Various astr<strong>in</strong>gent coliyriums were used to dim<strong>in</strong>ish <strong>and</strong> restra<strong>in</strong><br />

its growth.<br />

Irritability <strong>and</strong> weakness of <strong>the</strong> eye were relieved by astr<strong>in</strong>gent<br />

coliyriums of vitriohted z<strong>in</strong>c, alum, &c. Frequent ablutions withcold<br />

water, <strong>and</strong> v<strong>in</strong>egar <strong>and</strong> water, <strong>and</strong><br />

protect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

eye from<br />

strong: lic;ht, were found of advantage.
