tN <strong>the</strong> 24th of March we embarked on board a corvette manned<br />

by Greeks, which did not, however, get under wav<br />

until <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 26th, when she was warped out of <strong>the</strong><br />

harbour of Alex<strong>and</strong>ria by three large Turkish boats. The fort<br />

at <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t of <strong>the</strong> pen<strong>in</strong>sula hav<strong>in</strong>g fired a shot to br<strong>in</strong>g us to, <strong>the</strong><br />

anchor was dropped to wait for our clearance.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 27th we sailed out of <strong>the</strong> harbour with<br />

<strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d at east. The wea<strong>the</strong>r cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g moderate, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

breeze favourable, we made <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> of C<strong>and</strong>id on <strong>the</strong> 2.9th, distant<br />

from us about fifty miles to <strong>the</strong> westward. In this situation we<br />

bore away for Rhodes.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 30th at noon we had a strong gale from <strong>the</strong> east, which<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased so much towards <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g, that we were obliged to<br />

take <strong>in</strong> nearly <strong>the</strong> whole of our sails. The gale cont<strong>in</strong>ued dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> night, <strong>and</strong> our little vessel laboured so much, that we felt some,<br />

apprehension for our safety.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> :>lst, before break of<br />

<strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> to be <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> of C<strong>and</strong>id, whicli we had descried<br />

before <strong>the</strong> gale. At day-break we drew <strong>in</strong> towards <strong>the</strong> coast <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

hope of f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g a port ; <strong>and</strong> at length discovered, through a thick
