Fahrenheit. It is unnecessary to remark, that dur<strong>in</strong>g this <strong>in</strong>terval<br />

<strong>the</strong> heat was extremely oppressive to such of our party as had not<br />

been <strong>in</strong>ured to <strong>the</strong> more sultry climes. The sky was, at <strong>the</strong> above<br />

season, beautifully clear, without a cloud to obscure <strong>the</strong> wide ex-<br />

panse ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> atmosphere pure <strong>and</strong> benign. The greatest variation<br />

of temperature occurred <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> months of October <strong>and</strong> No-<br />

vember, when <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>s came on suddenly with some degree of vi-<br />

olence. This may properly be considered as <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y season, s<strong>in</strong>ce,<br />

generally speak<strong>in</strong>g, dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>the</strong> year a drought<br />

prevails. The very copious dew's which fall <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> dry months,<br />

when <strong>the</strong>re is a total absence of ra<strong>in</strong>, promote <strong>and</strong> forward <strong>the</strong><br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> summer months <strong>the</strong> prevail<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>ds are from <strong>the</strong><br />

north <strong>and</strong> north-west. In<br />

enter<strong>in</strong>g on October, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are more va-<br />

riable, blow<strong>in</strong>g strongly from <strong>the</strong> south, south-east, <strong>and</strong> east. It<br />

is at this time that <strong>the</strong> sudden <strong>and</strong> heavy showers commence, <strong>and</strong><br />

that <strong>the</strong> sky, which was before so uniformly clear, is overspread<br />

with dark <strong>and</strong> heavy clouds. At length, <strong>the</strong> month of November<br />

draw<strong>in</strong>g towards its close, <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>s cease to fall, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> wea-<br />

<strong>the</strong>r becomes pleasant <strong>and</strong> salubrious. The result of my observa-<br />

tions at this season was, that before sun-rise <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmometer ran-<br />

ged from 42 to 52 <strong>and</strong> 53, <strong>and</strong> that, consequently, <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

were refresh<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> cool. At noon <strong>the</strong> variations of <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmo-<br />

meter were from 66<br />

no means oppressive.<br />

to 76, with a degree<br />

of heat which was by<br />

On <strong>the</strong> coast of <strong>Syria</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea breeze prevails dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> day<br />

time, <strong>and</strong>, fall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g, gives place to <strong>the</strong> gentle l<strong>and</strong><br />

breeze, which cont<strong>in</strong>ues to blow until about n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> next morn-<br />

In <strong>the</strong> month of December, 1800, <strong>the</strong> January follow<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong><br />

a part of February, <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r was very tempestuous, with heavy<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>s, vivid lightn<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>and</strong> thunders, <strong>the</strong> explosion of which<br />

was awful <strong>and</strong> tremendous. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this period <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmometer<br />

was low; <strong>and</strong>, on one occasion, <strong>the</strong> storm was accompanied by<br />

hail. The w<strong>in</strong>ds were usually from <strong>the</strong> south or south-west. A<br />

haz<strong>in</strong>ess from <strong>the</strong> southward was <strong>the</strong> sure precursor of each of <strong>the</strong><br />

gales; <strong>and</strong> to this <strong>in</strong>dication of foul wea<strong>the</strong>r was superadded a remarkably<br />

large circle, or disk, round <strong>the</strong> moon. This boisterous<br />

<strong>and</strong><br />

comparatively cold wea<strong>the</strong>r was highly favourable to <strong>the</strong> health<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> mission. It yielded, about <strong>the</strong><br />

5 0th of February, to a more warm <strong>and</strong> settled temperature of <strong>the</strong>
