200 TRAVELS IN ASIATIC TURKEY,<br />

army. — I dreaded, I must confess, <strong>the</strong> consequences of <strong>the</strong>se re-<br />

gulations to our people, who would thus be left without tents to<br />

shelter <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> effects of a hot <strong>and</strong> parch<strong>in</strong>g sun, <strong>and</strong> who<br />

were not, like <strong>the</strong> Turkish troops, <strong>in</strong>ured to <strong>the</strong> climate <strong>and</strong> ac-<br />

customed to <strong>the</strong> privations to which <strong>the</strong> latter had been habituated<br />

from an early age. Under <strong>the</strong>se circumstances, which gave rise<br />

to bitter <strong>and</strong> distress<strong>in</strong>g reflections,<br />

I lamented <strong>the</strong> nature of <strong>the</strong><br />

service <strong>in</strong> Avhich<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were engaged, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> melancholy situation <strong>in</strong><br />

which I saw <strong>the</strong>m plunged.<br />

Two thous<strong>and</strong> five hundred troops arrived <strong>in</strong> camp on <strong>the</strong> even-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> above day. They consisted pr<strong>in</strong>cipally of <strong>the</strong> Arabs,<br />

Avarees, who <strong>in</strong>habit <strong>the</strong> eastern <strong>desert</strong>, <strong>the</strong> western parts of which<br />

are occupied by <strong>the</strong> Mograbians.<br />

It was f<strong>in</strong>ally settled on <strong>the</strong> J st of April, that a certa<strong>in</strong> portion<br />

of <strong>the</strong> baggage <strong>and</strong> tents should be carried with <strong>the</strong> army ; <strong>and</strong><br />

that <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der should be left <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> charge of a trusty <strong>and</strong><br />

responsible person,<br />

to follow its movements with all convenient<br />

despatch.<br />

Taher Pacha, accompanied by Capta<strong>in</strong> Leake, marched on<br />

<strong>the</strong> 2d towards Salahieh, with three thous<strong>and</strong> men, <strong>and</strong> three pieces<br />

of artillery. Summons to <strong>the</strong><br />

garrisons of T<strong>in</strong>eh <strong>and</strong> Salahieh<br />

were delivered to Capta<strong>in</strong> Leake by Colonel<br />

Hollo-xay, under <strong>the</strong><br />

authority<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier. Mahomed Pacha arrived <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

encampment from Gaza, with three thous<strong>and</strong><br />

ces of<br />

artillery.<br />

men, <strong>and</strong> four pie-<br />

Much fir<strong>in</strong>g among <strong>the</strong> Turkish troops was heard <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> camp<br />

on <strong>the</strong> 3d. It was occasioned by a violent dispute between two<br />

companies of janissaries, <strong>the</strong> 37th <strong>and</strong> 65th, rtvho, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> division<br />

of a quantity of barley which <strong>the</strong>y had found <strong>and</strong> appropriated to<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves, had come to hostilities. In this conflict several of<br />

<strong>the</strong>m were killed, <strong>and</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>rs wounded. It happened that<br />

an Arnaut, who was pass<strong>in</strong>g by dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> affray, received a slight<br />

wound. This man made an immediate representation to his corps,<br />

that it was <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tention of <strong>the</strong> janissaries to fall on <strong>and</strong> butcher <strong>the</strong><br />

Amauts without dist<strong>in</strong>ction. The effect of this mis-statement was,<br />

that <strong>the</strong> latter had recourse to <strong>the</strong>ir arms, <strong>and</strong> were proceed<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> most alarm<strong>in</strong>g measures, which were, however, fortunately<br />

prevented by <strong>the</strong> strenuous <strong>in</strong>terference of <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Turkish<br />

officers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> camp.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole of <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g it blew a violent gale, which<br />

raised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air tremendous clouds of s<strong>and</strong>, extremely harrass<strong>in</strong>g to
