<strong>in</strong> which a<br />

very<br />

numerous body of Turks was assembled at<br />

prayers.<br />

A little before noon <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard, supported by several of <strong>the</strong><br />

EfFendi, <strong>the</strong> Tefterdar, <strong>the</strong> Janissary Aga, &c. who had attended<br />

on this occasion, now took leave, <strong>the</strong> Mufti be<strong>in</strong>g accompanied to<br />

his carriage, a small close vehicle covered with scarlet cloth, by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Vizier himself. On <strong>the</strong> close of <strong>the</strong> ceremony <strong>the</strong> British<br />

officers were <strong>in</strong>troduced to <strong>the</strong> Reis Effendi,"or secretary of state<br />

for foreign affairs, by whom <strong>the</strong>y were conducted <strong>and</strong> presented to<br />

his<br />

royal highness<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier. They found him seated <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> corner of a room, richly furnished <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 'Turkish<br />

style, <strong>and</strong><br />

surrounded by a numerous body of attendants <strong>and</strong> mutes, all of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

were served, accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> custom of <strong>the</strong> country, with pipes,<br />

sweetmeats, coffee, sherbet, rose-water <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r perfumes. No<br />

mark of dist<strong>in</strong>ction due to <strong>the</strong>ir rank was neglected on this occa-<br />
