fasted at half past three <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> proceeded without<br />

delay to Levant Chi flick, where we jo<strong>in</strong>ed our detachment. About<br />

eight o'clock we arrived at Kaithanuh, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Seignor,<br />

his pr<strong>in</strong>cipal officers <strong>and</strong> suite, made <strong>the</strong>ir appearance shortly after.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> artillery practice, <strong>the</strong> experiments with red-hot shot,<br />

cluded, made each of us a trifl<strong>in</strong>g present. These presents were<br />

delivered to us by one of his suite, who tendered <strong>the</strong>m to us re-<br />

met <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Seignor's surgeon, with whom I visited <strong>the</strong> wound-<br />

ed Turks. Several of <strong>the</strong>m were already <strong>in</strong> a state of recovery.<br />

In our own <strong>in</strong>firmary I found four cases of <strong>in</strong>termittent fever. The<br />

men who laboured under this compla<strong>in</strong>t, had been sent to Kaithanah<br />

some weeks before to assist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> erection of <strong>the</strong> furnace for <strong>the</strong><br />

heat<strong>in</strong>g of shot ; <strong>and</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g been deta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>re for several days,<br />

weie exposed to marsh miasma, which is well known to be a most<br />

powerful agent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> production of <strong>in</strong>termittents.<br />
