Sept. 18. Before sun- rise <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmometer was at 71; <strong>the</strong> air<br />

cool, <strong>and</strong> refresh<strong>in</strong>g: nor<strong>the</strong>rly w<strong>in</strong>ds prevail, <strong>and</strong> die whole of<br />

<strong>the</strong> country as far as <strong>the</strong> pyramids of Giza is <strong>in</strong>undated.<br />

Sept. 21. Nights cool; fresh breezes from <strong>the</strong> northward.<br />

Some fresh cases of ophthalmy have occurred with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se few<br />

days, which appear to have been produced by <strong>the</strong> sharp nor<strong>the</strong>rly<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ds; this affection yielded easily to blisters beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> ears, sa-<br />

turn<strong>in</strong>e collvriums, <strong>and</strong> purges.<br />

This day an enormous hydrocele presented itself <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>habitant<br />

of Cairo, sixteen <strong>in</strong>ches by twelve <strong>in</strong> diameter. These cases, as<br />

well as hernia, are common <strong>in</strong> <strong>Egypt</strong>.<br />

The elephantiasis among <strong>the</strong> women is a frequent disease.<br />

Sept. 23. Many dreadful cases of leprosy are seen <strong>in</strong> Cairo,<br />

which occasionally make dreadful havoc <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face :<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> loss of<br />

nose, lips, eyes, &c. In <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> of Scio, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Archipelago,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is an hospital for <strong>the</strong> reception of <strong>the</strong> leprous of <strong>the</strong> different<br />

isl<strong>and</strong>s. I took <strong>the</strong> opportunity to visit this spot when on my re-<br />

turn to Constant<strong>in</strong>ople. Upwards of two hundred of <strong>the</strong>se poor<br />

unfortunate sufferers were <strong>the</strong>re collected. Vide narrative when<br />

at Scio.<br />

Sept. 30. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this month <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>and</strong> troops were<br />

healthy.<br />

The wea<strong>the</strong>r pleasant, <strong>and</strong> moderately warm.<br />

The prevail<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>ds N. W.<br />

The latter end of <strong>the</strong> month heavy dews fell (lur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> nir'ht.<br />

commenced about <strong>the</strong> l!)th.<br />

October. Some cases of <strong>in</strong>termit tents among <strong>the</strong> troops at Gi-<br />

za. At Alex<strong>and</strong>ria <strong>the</strong> prevail<strong>in</strong>g diseases were diarrhoea, dy-<br />

senteries, <strong>and</strong> old cases of ophthalmy.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> most part October was a temperate, <strong>and</strong> agreeable month.<br />

The morn<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> even<strong>in</strong>gs were cool, with refresh<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>ds from<br />

<strong>the</strong> northward. When <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d came round to <strong>the</strong> eastward of<br />

north, <strong>the</strong> days were warm, sultry, ami oppressive; though <strong>the</strong><br />

mercury did not raise higher<br />

than 80 <strong>in</strong> shade.<br />

November. Catarrhs <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>termittents were <strong>the</strong><br />

prevail<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dis-<br />

eases of this month, which was cold, ra<strong>in</strong>y, <strong>and</strong> stormy.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 20th <strong>the</strong>re was a tremendous storm, accompanied<br />

with ra<strong>in</strong>, thunder, <strong>and</strong> lightn<strong>in</strong>g. W<strong>in</strong>d N. W.<br />

This tempestuous wea<strong>the</strong>r cont<strong>in</strong>ued several davs, with only some<br />

little <strong>in</strong>termission.<br />
