of our carriage. Hav<strong>in</strong>g replaced this wheel by a more solid one,<br />

we proceeded to Neislischene, a large <strong>and</strong> well built town, pro-<br />

vided with a fortress, which we reached at seven <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> centre of this town, as well as of several o<strong>the</strong>rs through<br />

which we passed, <strong>the</strong>re is a large square, surrounded by commodi-<br />

ous <strong>and</strong> well-built houses, beneath which are piazzas, with shops<br />

lor <strong>the</strong> sale of different merch<strong>and</strong>izes.<br />

Under <strong>the</strong> piazzas <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> wet wea<strong>the</strong>r. We<br />

quitted <strong>the</strong> above place,<br />

<strong>and</strong> reached Weiskcrk a little before mid-<br />

night.<br />

At two <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 13th we passed through a re-<br />

spectable town called Lytnictz, <strong>and</strong> between <strong>the</strong> hours of three<br />

<strong>and</strong> four reached our first<br />

stage, Bosaugess, hav<strong>in</strong>g passed over a<br />

very hilly <strong>and</strong> heavy road, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst of a violent storm, accompanied<br />

by thunder <strong>and</strong> lightn<strong>in</strong>g. From this place we proceeded to<br />

Oitmitz, a large, well built, <strong>and</strong> fortified town, which has, how-<br />

ever, but an <strong>in</strong>considerable trade. Our subsequent stages, on this<br />

day's journey, were Prosnitz, Wischau, Posorzitz, Br<strong>in</strong>n, a large<br />

<strong>and</strong> populous fortified town, provided with a citadel, <strong>and</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g several h<strong>and</strong>some build<strong>in</strong>gs; Clay, Maariheify Nivolscopurg?<br />

<strong>and</strong> Porsdorf.<br />

We were now approach<strong>in</strong>g Vienna, hav<strong>in</strong>g six stages only to<br />

perform. On <strong>the</strong> 19th we passed successively through Wilfersdorf,<br />

Girnesdorf, Wulnersdorf, Crizersdorf, <strong>and</strong> Tarmersdorf, ma-<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g at each of <strong>the</strong>se places <strong>the</strong> necessary halt to change horses,<br />

<strong>and</strong> at eleven <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g were safely arrived <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Imperial dom<strong>in</strong>ions.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g procured a lackey to accompany me, <strong>and</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t out what<br />

was most deserv<strong>in</strong>g of notice at Vienna, I paid a visit to Mr. Stew-<br />

iti't, secretary of legation, <strong>and</strong> left a letter of recommendation from<br />

Mr. Stratton to <strong>the</strong> British m<strong>in</strong>ister, Mr. Paget. I d<strong>in</strong>ed with<br />

several English gentlemen, at <strong>the</strong> Augarten, <strong>the</strong> saloon of which<br />

is very h<strong>and</strong>some, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> gardens prettily laid out <strong>and</strong> embellish-<br />

ed. We went afterwards to <strong>the</strong> prater, or promenade, without<br />

<strong>the</strong> town, where a great number of people of all ranks <strong>and</strong> clas-<br />

ses were assembled. We spent <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> Imperial<br />

<strong>the</strong>atre.<br />

Doctor Carro, a physician of celebrity at Vienna* to whom I<br />

had an <strong>in</strong>troduction, was at this time engaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> practice of <strong>the</strong><br />

vacc<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>oculation, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formed me, on my pay<strong>in</strong>g him a morn-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g's visit, on <strong>the</strong> 21st, that he had had five hundred cases, all of
