for <strong>the</strong> accommodation of both man <strong>and</strong> horse ; as, however,<br />

no dependence can be placed on f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g refreshments <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

<strong>the</strong> traveller is under <strong>the</strong> necessity of provid<strong>in</strong>g himself with what-<br />

ever may be requisite to his support. These kanns are spacious<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs, hav<strong>in</strong>g on each side a raised floor, on which <strong>the</strong> travel-<br />

lers spread <strong>the</strong>ir mats, or carpets, to repose <strong>the</strong>mselves, while <strong>the</strong><br />

centre is occupied by <strong>the</strong> horses. They are constantly open to re-<br />

ceive those who are <strong>in</strong> need of an asylum for rest. In travell<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Turks are <strong>in</strong> general furnished accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir rank <strong>and</strong> con-<br />

sequence, <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> service <strong>the</strong>y have to perform. are They usu-<br />

ally accompanied by a Mikmendar, a Chiaous, a Cavashe, or a<br />

Tartar, whose duty it is to procure provisions, <strong>and</strong> provide every<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g requisite to <strong>the</strong> accomplishment of <strong>the</strong> journey.<br />

Such, how-<br />

ever, is <strong>the</strong> rapacity of <strong>the</strong>se attendants, that, often not content<br />

with hav<strong>in</strong>g every necessary supplied by <strong>the</strong> needy <strong>and</strong> suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>-<br />

habitants, <strong>the</strong>y dem<strong>and</strong>, what <strong>in</strong> Turkish is called kcre el dars,<br />

which implies someth<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>the</strong> teeth.<br />

The 18th be<strong>in</strong>g her Majesty's birth-day, I was present at a ball<br />

<strong>and</strong> supper given on <strong>the</strong> occasion bv Lord Elg<strong>in</strong>. The company<br />

was very numerous, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> tables splendid <strong>and</strong> well served.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of rhe 19th, General Kothler, Major Fletcher,<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong> Leake, Mr. P<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong> draughtsman, <strong>and</strong> Mr. Carlisle, from<br />

<strong>the</strong> British ambassador's palace, all of <strong>the</strong>m equipped as Tartars,<br />

left Constant<strong>in</strong>ople to proceed to <strong>Syria</strong> bv l<strong>and</strong>.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 20th I was present at a religious ceremony of <strong>the</strong> dervises,<br />

or Turkish priests. The house <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y assembled was<br />

of an octagon form, with two galleries, <strong>the</strong> upper of which, sup-<br />

ported by pillars, was occupied by musicians, who played very soft<br />

<strong>and</strong> solemn music. In <strong>the</strong> lower gallery were stationed <strong>the</strong> Turks<br />

<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs who attended to witness this very s<strong>in</strong>gular service.<br />

Round <strong>the</strong> apartment were hung <strong>in</strong> frames several Arabic senten-<br />

ces, one of which, <strong>in</strong> particular, was suspended exactly over <strong>the</strong><br />

head of <strong>the</strong> superior of <strong>the</strong> dervises. He was seated; <strong>and</strong> each of<br />

<strong>the</strong> dervises, on enter<strong>in</strong>g, bowed to him, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n took his place<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower gallery. Between twenty <strong>and</strong> thirty of <strong>the</strong>se monks<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g assembled, <strong>the</strong> superior repeated a prayer, dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uance<br />

of which <strong>the</strong>y kneeled, <strong>and</strong> bowed <strong>the</strong>ir heads to <strong>the</strong> floor,<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y occasionally appeared to kiss. After <strong>the</strong>y had chaunted<br />

for some time, with <strong>the</strong> accompaniment of <strong>the</strong> music <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> gallery,<br />

<strong>the</strong> superior rose, <strong>and</strong> with a slow <strong>and</strong> solemn pace walked<br />

three times round <strong>the</strong> apartment, bow<strong>in</strong>g when he passed <strong>the</strong>
