TRAVELS IN ASIATIC TURKEY,<br />

<strong>the</strong> church, were directed to <strong>the</strong> spot where St. John was borny<br />

<strong>and</strong> which is constantly lighted up by lamps. The church is very<br />

neatly decorated, <strong>and</strong> is ornamented by several good pictures.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>habitants of St. John are a mixture of Turks <strong>and</strong> Arabs,<br />

<strong>the</strong> former of whom are by far <strong>the</strong> most numerous. They were, at<br />

<strong>the</strong> time of cur visit, as well as two o<strong>the</strong>r neighbour<strong>in</strong>g villages, <strong>in</strong><br />

a hostile state to Mahomed Pacha, who, not content with hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

levied <strong>the</strong> customary annual avanias, or tributes, had endeavoured<br />

to exact heavy contributions, which <strong>the</strong>y had nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> will nor<br />

<strong>the</strong> capacity to pay. They had accord<strong>in</strong>gly assembled, <strong>and</strong> had<br />

sworn, lay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir swords <strong>across</strong>, which with <strong>the</strong>m adds great<br />

solemnity to <strong>the</strong> protestation, that <strong>the</strong>y would prefer death to a submission<br />

to any dem<strong>and</strong> which should exceed <strong>the</strong> customary amount<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir contributions. In <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity of this village <strong>the</strong>re are se-<br />

veral f<strong>in</strong>e v<strong>in</strong>eyards, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r spots <strong>in</strong> excellent cultivation.<br />

After hav<strong>in</strong>g taken <strong>the</strong> necessary refreshments, we quitted St.<br />

John at two <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon, on our way to St. Jerome; on our<br />

approach<strong>in</strong>g which place we were met bv <strong>the</strong> Arab sheick, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

considerable number of his people, who had come out to welcome<br />

us, <strong>and</strong> pay <strong>the</strong>ir respects. On our arrival, at half past four o'clock,<br />

we were conducted to a house which had been prepared for our re-<br />

ception ; <strong>and</strong>, hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

found ourselves at our ease.<br />

?<br />

brought with us cold provisions, we soon<br />

Shortly after we had reached <strong>the</strong> village, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants, who<br />

were equally refractory with <strong>the</strong>se of St. John, were thrown <strong>in</strong>to<br />

great confusion <strong>and</strong> alarm by <strong>the</strong> rumour that <strong>the</strong> troops of Maho-<br />

med Pacha were approach<strong>in</strong>g. Instantly both men <strong>and</strong> women<br />

fled to an adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g post, situated on a lofty mounta<strong>in</strong>, very diffi-<br />

cult of access, <strong>and</strong> equally hazardous to an enemy who should me-<br />

ditate an attack. They <strong>the</strong>re waited fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>telligence respect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> advances of <strong>the</strong> redoubted Pacha.<br />

On our ris<strong>in</strong>g at four <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 2 1st, <strong>the</strong>re was a<br />

very considerable fall of dew, which, <strong>in</strong> this country, where <strong>the</strong><br />

ra<strong>in</strong>s occur so seldom, is <strong>in</strong> a manner <strong>in</strong>dispensable to <strong>the</strong> vegetation.<br />

We were told at Jerusalem that ra<strong>in</strong> had not fallen <strong>the</strong>re dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

n<strong>in</strong>e months.<br />

The v<strong>in</strong>eyards about St. Jerome, cultivated <strong>in</strong> terraces, or, <strong>in</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r words, banked <strong>in</strong> with stones to prevent, <strong>the</strong> escape of <strong>the</strong><br />

soil <strong>and</strong> moisture, .had a very promis<strong>in</strong>g appearance. We left that<br />

place about seven o'clock, to proceed to Kamla, <strong>and</strong> took a route<br />

over <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itely more agreeable <strong>and</strong> commodious to <strong>the</strong>
