hung up near <strong>the</strong> pulpit, beh<strong>in</strong>d which is <strong>the</strong> sanctuary. Ad-<br />

jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> great corridor <strong>the</strong>re is a chapel ; <strong>and</strong> a gallery, appropriated<br />

to <strong>the</strong> women, surrounds <strong>the</strong> whole of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior of<br />

<strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g. The nave is supported by columns of porphyry,<br />

granite, &c.<br />

The Pacha of Ni'comedia, Husse<strong>in</strong> Pacha, on his return to Con-<br />

stant<strong>in</strong>ople from Ridosto, whi<strong>the</strong>r he had been sent some time be-<br />

fore for <strong>the</strong> purpose of dispers<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> b<strong>and</strong>s of robbers collected <strong>in</strong><br />

Romeliu, was decapitated on <strong>the</strong> 22d. On this occasion a remar-<br />

kable <strong>in</strong>stance of Turkish duplicity occurred. His reception by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Kia ma kan, on his reach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> capital, was highly flatter<strong>in</strong>g ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> he was <strong>in</strong>vited bv him to proceed to <strong>the</strong><br />

seraglio, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re receive<br />

<strong>the</strong> rewards due to his good <strong>and</strong> meritorious conduct. On<br />

his enter<strong>in</strong>g, however, <strong>the</strong> gate of <strong>the</strong> seraglio,<br />

after <strong>the</strong> Kia ma<br />

kan had saluted him, <strong>and</strong> wished him a good morn<strong>in</strong>g, he was<br />

seized by <strong>the</strong> guards, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stantly decapitated. It was reported,<br />

that he had been guiltv of several gross acts of misconduct; <strong>and</strong> it<br />

was urged, among o<strong>the</strong>r accusations, that he had not opposed so<br />

effectual a resistance to <strong>the</strong> b<strong>and</strong>itti as he might have done ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> that<br />

he had levied heavy contributions on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants of Ridosto, <strong>and</strong><br />

of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r towns of Romtlia.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 2Gth General Koehlcr, <strong>and</strong> all <strong>the</strong> officers belong<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> mission, went <strong>in</strong> procession through <strong>the</strong> streets of Constan-<br />

t<strong>in</strong>ople to <strong>the</strong> Porte. Several horses richly caparisoned, under <strong>the</strong><br />

charge of one of <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Seignor's equerries, <strong>and</strong> led by as ma-<br />

ny sais, or Turkish grooms, were, toge<strong>the</strong>r with a party of janissaries,<br />

<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r troops, <strong>in</strong> wait<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g place to conduct<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> Porte, on <strong>the</strong>ir reach<strong>in</strong>g which, <strong>the</strong>y were presented<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Reis EfFendi, Kia ma kan, <strong>and</strong> Kiabey, each <strong>in</strong> his particu-<br />

lar apartment. After <strong>the</strong> usual compliments had been paid <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

<strong>the</strong> General <strong>and</strong> Lieutenant-colonel Hollozvay were <strong>in</strong>vested with<br />

pelices, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r officers with beniches, or robes of honour.<br />

Embroidered h<strong>and</strong>kerchiefs, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r presents, were also distribu-<br />

ted. Hav<strong>in</strong>g taken leave, <strong>the</strong>y returned <strong>in</strong> procession, observ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> same order as <strong>in</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g out. This visit of ceremony had been<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted by <strong>the</strong> Porte, previously to <strong>the</strong> departure of <strong>the</strong> mission<br />

for<br />

<strong>Syria</strong>,<br />

to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> army of <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier, for which purpose<br />

<strong>the</strong> detachment was under orders to embark on board <strong>the</strong> trans-<br />

port.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 4th of June a superb fete, <strong>in</strong> honour of his Majesty's<br />

birth-day, was given by Lord Elg<strong>in</strong>. On this occasion all <strong>the</strong>
