TRAVELS IN ASIATIC TURKEY,<br />

but arc removed without much difficulty. They sic also subject<br />

to phthisis <strong>and</strong> hemoptisis, <strong>the</strong> former be<strong>in</strong>g frequently fatal : <strong>the</strong> air<br />

of <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> is <strong>in</strong>deed considered as too stimulat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> lungs.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>stances of longevity at Scio are very few ; <strong>and</strong> I could not<br />

learn that any of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants pass <strong>the</strong>ir eightieth year. As a<br />

proof, however, that <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> is not generally deemed unhealthy,<br />

it has been selected as <strong>the</strong> residence of several valetud<strong>in</strong>arians from<br />

different parts of Europe. Among <strong>the</strong>se a very rich Englishman,<br />

named Bradbridge, of an eccentric character, retired to Scio on<br />

account of <strong>the</strong> deranged state of his health, which was considera-<br />

bly improved by a long residence on this isl<strong>and</strong>. He died <strong>the</strong>re<br />

about fifteen years before our arrival.<br />

From beneath <strong>the</strong> rock, which I have already described as be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> site of <strong>the</strong> school of Homer, a spr<strong>in</strong>g of water issues, which is<br />

celebrated for its purity <strong>and</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>al properties. It is resorted to<br />

by all <strong>the</strong> valetud<strong>in</strong>arians of Scio, who ascribe to this water a diuretic<br />

quality.<br />

It is <strong>in</strong>deed so much extolled, <strong>and</strong> held <strong>in</strong> such general<br />

estimation, that large quantities of it are occasionally<br />

sent to<br />

Constant<strong>in</strong>ople j for <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Seignor <strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> serag-<br />

lio. Every part of <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> is supplied with delicious water,<br />

which is conveyed by aqueducts from place to place for <strong>the</strong> use of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants of <strong>the</strong> different villages.<br />

I should have observed, that <strong>the</strong> cultivated l<strong>and</strong>s are <strong>in</strong> general<br />

enclosed by stone walls from two to three feet <strong>in</strong> height, which are<br />

extremely useful <strong>in</strong> particular situations, more especially on <strong>the</strong><br />

sides of <strong>the</strong> more elevated mounta<strong>in</strong>s, which are cultivated almost<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir summits. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> falls of ra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> waters are prevented<br />

by <strong>the</strong>se walls from carry<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> soil, as well as <strong>the</strong> produce<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>closures, <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> vallies beneath.<br />

We sailed from Scio on <strong>the</strong> 5th, at half past ten <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> time of our departure, <strong>the</strong> Greeks were prepar<strong>in</strong>g to cele-<br />

brate <strong>the</strong> festival of 5/. George. About five o'clock on <strong>the</strong> follow-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g morn<strong>in</strong>g we were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> gulf of Smyrna, midway between<br />

Carabaroun <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> of Miiylene, <strong>the</strong> territory surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Smyrna be<strong>in</strong>g dist<strong>in</strong>ctly <strong>in</strong> sight. At half past twelve o'clock we<br />

arrived at Miiylene, <strong>and</strong> anchored <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> harbour of Castro, or<br />

Mitylene, <strong>the</strong> ancient Lesbos, <strong>the</strong> birth-place of so many learned<br />

persons, whose celebritv has been h<strong>and</strong>ed down to our times.<br />

Pit tat us, <strong>the</strong> poet Aldeus, Sappho, Epicus, TJicophrastus, <strong>and</strong><br />

Diophanes, are among <strong>the</strong> many great <strong>and</strong> extraord<strong>in</strong>ary characters
