<strong>the</strong> mosque itself We had a l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> comm<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g view of Jerusalem^<br />

Mount Sion, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea.<br />

In descend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g afterwards through<br />

<strong>the</strong> valley of Jehushapliat, we were gratified by <strong>the</strong> view of several<br />

memorable spots. We saw, among o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> tombs of Absalom<br />

<strong>and</strong> Zeehariah ; <strong>and</strong> visited <strong>the</strong> place where <strong>the</strong> apostles conceal-<br />

ed <strong>the</strong>mselves when Jesus was led by. We were next conducted to<br />

<strong>the</strong> well of St. Barb, at <strong>the</strong> foot of Mount Sion, where <strong>the</strong> vest-<br />

ments of Jesus ware washed; <strong>and</strong> at an <strong>in</strong>considerable distance from<br />

it, <strong>in</strong>spected <strong>the</strong> wells of JSiefiemiah.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> leav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

valley<br />

of Jehoshaphat, we passed to <strong>the</strong><br />

right<br />

of <strong>the</strong> place where <strong>the</strong> body of <strong>the</strong> prophet Isaiah was severed <strong>in</strong>to<br />

two parts. In ascend<strong>in</strong>g Mount SioH, we saw, on <strong>the</strong> of<br />

acclivity<br />

an opposite mounta<strong>in</strong>, a build<strong>in</strong>g erected on <strong>the</strong> spot where Judas<br />

Iscariot betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. On reach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> summit of <strong>the</strong> mount, a church <strong>and</strong> convent, belonp-mp- to <strong>the</strong><br />

Armenians, were po<strong>in</strong>ted out to us, situated at a small distance<br />

from <strong>the</strong> entrance gate lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> back part of <strong>the</strong> city,<br />

it<br />

that <strong>the</strong> cock crew when Pe-<br />

was <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>the</strong> monks <strong>in</strong>formed us,<br />

ter denied Christ. Without <strong>the</strong> city walls, <strong>and</strong> on Mount Sion,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is a Turkish mosque st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> ground where K<strong>in</strong>g<br />

David was buried, <strong>and</strong> where our Saviour <strong>in</strong>stituted <strong>the</strong> Lord's<br />

supper.<br />

We returned to Jerusalem, <strong>and</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g partaken of a good d<strong>in</strong>-<br />

ner at <strong>the</strong> convent, paid an even<strong>in</strong>g's visit to <strong>the</strong> Mufti, who re-<br />

ceived us with much hospitality <strong>and</strong> politeness, <strong>and</strong> who expressed<br />

liis wish that we would spend ano<strong>the</strong>r day <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> holy city, <strong>in</strong> order<br />

that he might enterta<strong>in</strong> us <strong>in</strong> a suitable manner. We had, howe-<br />

ver, made our arrangements to set out on <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g morn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

on our return to Jajj'a.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g accord<strong>in</strong>gly made an early breakfast at <strong>the</strong> convent, we<br />

left Jerusalem at eight <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 20th. Our plan was,<br />

to halt at St. Jerome <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g; to proceed to Ramla on <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g dav; <strong>and</strong> to reach Jaffa en <strong>the</strong> third. On our way to<br />

<strong>the</strong> village of St. John, distant three hours journey from Jerusa-<br />

(.".'//, a l<strong>in</strong>e build<strong>in</strong>g, styled <strong>the</strong> convent of St. Helena, was po<strong>in</strong>t-<br />

ed out to us, as hav<strong>in</strong>g been built by that empress on <strong>the</strong> spot<br />

whence <strong>the</strong> timber was taken for our Saviour's Cross. In <strong>the</strong> vil-<br />
