nations <strong>in</strong>discrim<strong>in</strong>ately brought toge<strong>the</strong>r. The complexions<br />

depend of course on <strong>the</strong> varieties of <strong>the</strong> climates whence <strong>the</strong> different<br />

corps have been recruited. The Africans are black, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> exception of those who come from <strong>the</strong> more nor<strong>the</strong>rn parts of<br />

Africa, <strong>and</strong> who, notwithst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y have on <strong>the</strong> head <strong>the</strong> curled<br />

some been asserted, that<br />

are sprung from colonies imported<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> countries <strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>habit, from different parts of Europe <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Asia</strong>. The <strong>Egypt</strong>ians, as well as <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants of <strong>Asia</strong>, <strong>Syria</strong>,<br />

Diarbcker, &cc. are also dark ortawney. Among <strong>the</strong> whites may<br />

justly celebrated for <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>est complexion <strong>and</strong> most regular features<br />

So considerable, <strong>in</strong> a Turkish army,<br />

suite of attendants, who keep <strong>the</strong>ir eyes steadily fixed on him<br />

to catch his nod, <strong>and</strong> hasten to <strong>the</strong> execution of his imperious man-<br />

him, his dignity <strong>and</strong> respectability are estimated. Amidst all this<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>eur, his situation, than which noth<strong>in</strong>g can be more precarious,<br />
