In this workshop we will bring again to our awareness the competences, potentials, and coping
strategies gained in our lives so far in order to use them fruitfully in the “adventure of getting
older”. An encouraging look at “getting older” creates new life concepts as e.g. mutual strength and
social relevance. The intercultural exchange will enormously enlarge the multiplicity of life
concepts in aging. Women in Europe have a very high expectancy of life and so far very few usable
role models for this long phase of life after 50. We want to stay healthy and active for a long time
and live in social networks – how can this be done? It is common practice to focus on complaints
and limitations, salutogenesis in contrast looks at resources and potentials. For this endeavour we
will take inspiration from the theory of salutogenesis which poses the question what keeps us
healthy in contrast to the factors which make us sick. Thus in this exchange we will stress the
“treasures” which we have gathered in our lives. We will approach this topic in turning in the first
place to historical biographies of women in Weimar which can serve as models. After having
looked at the salutogenic aspects of historical biographies of women, we will turn to our own life
histories. Employing creative methods as e.g. painting, theatre without words, working with inner
images and so forth we will try to overcome language barriers in a rather personal exchange and to
find out the personal abilities and potentials which at times are more recognizable in images and
stories. By this procedure their relevance for a vision of what aging may be in the future will
become evident.
