Power relations are part of the daily life. They occur within family, on the job, among friends, in
parliaments, at G20 summits as well as by the Wall street. People are acting as those who have
power (rulers), who are establishing countervailing power (rebels), who are making a fool of power
(jesters) – or who are silent. Power is often seen in a negative way. But power means also “making”
something (in German: “Macht” – “machen”) or being able to do something (in French: “le
pouvoir” – “pouvoir”). People are developing their possibilities and influence their relationships as
well as the structures of the society. – In which way is power fascinating? Why is it often described
as being a demonic one? What kind of competencies and potencial capacities do “people like you
and me” have in order to get involved in groups and to influence developments? And in the
opposite: In which way are people made by power? How is power and the “order of society” seen in
the different European countries? What can I learn referring to the understanding of other cultures,
what can I learn about my own context? Do women practise another kind of power than men – in
the different cultures? How is it possible to combine power and responsibility: to “manage” power
in a responsible way and to take responsibility which also means power? How could be strenghten
confidence in order to make responsible power possible? How could self-confidence and inner
freedom be underpined so that people can make their voices heard? We will talk about power (and
democracy) within family, the field of work and labour, the activities of citizens, and the context of
politics. The impressions we get at excursions and during interviews with different persons we will
“reflect” in a creative way by the Sociodrama method. Sociodramas are supervised, improvised role
games in which we put ourselves into other people's situations and try out how this role feels for us.
We are then better able to experience how the world looks when "standing in someone else's shoes".
Sociodrama helps to understand the dynamics of processes within the whole society and to develop
own strategies to act.
