Members of urban communities, community activists and people interested in urban issues and
post-socialist cities, practitioners active in civic movements, representatives from the third sector,
city officials interested in urban activism.
Members of civic movements, urban planning officials and politicians.
The prospective participants will need to show high interest in urban issues, have some experience
in grassroots’ level activities and be willing to share knowledge about the practices in their
countries. The participants will be asked to describe briefly their experience and motivation in a
separate motivation letter.
Main activities Programme + Programme translation:
The objectives of the workshop are to facilitate learning and knowledge sharing between European
urban activists; to promote grassroots’ initiatives and citizen activism in shaping urban
environments; to find solutions for problems typical to post-socialist cities; to introduce Estonian
community organisations and activists to foreigners.
The workshop will be organised in close cooperation with community organisations in Tallinn and
will be open for members of neighbourhood groups from Tartu, Narva, Viljandi, Rakvere and other
Estonian towns.
Residency of urban activists:
1) workshops on urban development and planning, community activism and critical urbanism
2) sharing experiences and methods on citizen activism and urban interventions
3) networking between citizen activists from Europe
4) study visits to different neighbourhood communities in Tallinn (Kalamaja, Pirita, Vanalinn, etc)
5) participating in the annual conference of the International Urban Research and Activism
(INURA) in Tallinn
Better understanding about the field of urban activism, higher awareness of different neighbourhood
and community initiatives, better contacts between different activists and people interested in these
issues, more knowledge about post-socialist cities and Eastern Europe. The workshop will inspire
those who are trying to shape or protect their living environment in meaningful ways.
