through the centuries

European citizens with minor or no expertise in wine tasting and great interest in tasting of different
varieties of wines and learning the procedure for the preparation of wine (from the vineyard
cultivation until the packaging of the wine in the bottle)
Main activities Programme + Programme translation:
The main activities of the workshop combine wine tasting lessons (theoretical and practical) along
with lectures. Participants are going to be given the chance to be informed not only about the
historical background of Cyprus but also its long-lasting relationship with wine. In addition,
presentations are going to be given on matters such as Cyprus agriculture and vine cultivation in the
past and present as well as current policies within the EU related to the cultivation of vines and
wine production. Participants are going to have the chance be presented with an overview of the
best practices of other European countries related to agricultural policies and to a further extent vine
cultivation and wine production. What is more, participants will have the chance to experience an
on the spot presentation of the methods of wine making in a specific region of Cyprus. The
programme of the workshop also includes: a study visit at the vineyards of the area. Presentation of
the main characteristics of the local varieties of Cypriot vines, information about the soil and
climate conditions at the cultivation area. Study visits in specific wineries in the area that are
designed to provide educational facilities. Presentation of the wine making procedure, “from the
grape crop to the bottle”. In detail explanation of the modern wine making process according to the
characteristics of each variety. Wine tasting lessons. The wine tasting lessons will take place at the
wineries that have the relevant infrastructure and will be given by the house “sommeliers”.
Theoretical and practical study of recognizing the quality grade of various wines. Presentation of
the main characteristics of different wines, combination of two or more varieties in the same bottle.
Combining food with the appropriate wine. A detailed programme will be published on the website
of the organiser ( www.iapacyprus.eu ).
