<strong>The</strong> latter are not examples <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gular/plural alternations but there<br />
are good reasons for claim<strong>in</strong>g that also surface [karca], ‘heart’ and<br />
[omorfca'], ‘beauty’ (both s<strong>in</strong>gular) have the underly<strong>in</strong>g forms /kar1ia/<br />
and /omorfia/ respectively.<br />
b. When <strong>in</strong> postconsonantal, prevocalic position and follow<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
sonorant (other than r) or the fricatives /s/ and /z/, high vowel i coalesces<br />
with the consonant preced<strong>in</strong>g it. This results <strong>in</strong> palatalisation. Note that<br />
all consonants coalesc<strong>in</strong>g with i are [+coronal]:<br />
4 [ale'fka] is attested <strong>in</strong> Mesarka and [ale'rka] <strong>in</strong> Pafos (regions <strong>of</strong> Cyprus). [ale'vria] is<br />
