APPENDIX A
By assigning weights to the different points we can force the computer
to “pay attention” to some data points more than others, if for
whatever reason there are doubts about the validity of the data.
The program we used proved quite robust in the sense that changing
weights and starting values affected only the computing time but not the
final results. Still, we found variations and correlations between the parameters
a, b and M, particularly in the instance of the Malthusian case.
In Appendix B we present some results of an extensive study on the error
sizes to be expected and the correlations between the three
parameters of an S-curve determined from a fit.
