ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Bagwell, my initiator in the world of business, for his continuous encouragement
and guidance.
The idea for this book was given to me by Michael Royston, who
encouraged and advised me through the phases of conception. Gordon
Frazer helped my writing when he revealed to me—in a condensed tutorial
session on composition—how much one needs not to say. The text
further benefited from the editorial work of Marilyn Gildea, who went
over the English with an exemplary professionalism, teaching me much
about how to write correctly. She also won my confidence on suggestions
well beyond the editorial scope. Her contributions made me enjoy
writing.
My editors at Simon & Schuster, Fred Hills and Burton Beals,
worked hard on the manuscript and made me do the same, thus producing
a greatly improved text.
I am also indebted to Pierre Darriulat, Simon van der Meer, John
Casti, Nebojsa Nakicenovic, and Nicholas Nikas who were kind enough
to read the manuscript and offer their comments on short notice.
For this ten-year-later edition I want to thank Mihali Yannopoulos,
who among other things designed the drawing of the cover.
Finally, I want to thank Maria Terzopoulou who gave me moral as
well as physical support throughout the process of updating the graphs
and the manuscript.
