WHY DID SWEDES REPLACE RUSSIANS?
The ratio: Sweden
APPENDIX FIGURE 6.7 The ratio of Swedes to Russians in a Swedish-Russian
“microniche” of Nobel prize winners. In fair agreement with a straight line the
evolution of this ratio raises questions to whether we are witnessing a natural
substitution in passing from an 80% Russian group to an 80% Swedish one 25
years later or whether there was some other factor at work. ∗
∗ The figure is reprinted from my article, “Competition and Forecasts for Nobel Prize
Awards,” Technological Forecasting and Social Change, vol. 34 (1988): 95-102.
