1948. The recipient is selected on the basis of<br />
demonstrated artistic talent and potential for<br />
exemplary achievement. Memorization skills<br />
will be considered, and the scholarship may be<br />
used for undergraduate or graduate tuition.<br />
Starost-Speicher Music Memorial Award.<br />
William Speicher, Class of 1935, and Helen<br />
Starost Speicher, Class of 1941, M.S. 1948<br />
established this fund in memory of Helen’s<br />
father John Charles Starost to aid worthy and<br />
capable students in the Jordan College of Fine<br />
Arts. Recipients are full-time undergraduate<br />
students with at least a 2.5 grade point average.<br />
They are selected on the basis of demonstrated<br />
artistic talent and memorization skills.<br />
Applicants must be Sigma Alpha Iota<br />
members in good standing.<br />
John and Martha Herrforth Starr Scholarship.<br />
Martha Herrforth Starr, a 1933 graduate of the<br />
Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music, created<br />
this scholarship in memory of her husband<br />
John, a long-time employee of the Indianapolis<br />
Water Company. The award is intended to<br />
encourage students who have demonstrated the<br />
capacity to achieve educational and professional<br />
goals and the initiative to seek opportunities<br />
to further their progress. Recipients are to be<br />
selected on the basis of financial need. Preference<br />
is given to music majors who attended Emmerich<br />
Manual High School in Indianapolis; secondary<br />
preference is given to students who attended<br />
Indianapolis Public Schools. Recipients must<br />
maintain a 3.0 grade point average and may<br />
renew as long as they enrolled as full-time<br />
students. One or more recipients may be<br />
selected with the intent that each receives<br />
at least $1,000.<br />
Marilyn Redinger Van Sickle Vocal Music<br />
Scholarship. This endowed scholarship is from<br />
the estate of Marilyn Van Sickle <strong>Butler</strong>, Class of<br />
1942, in memory of Ivan Roy Redinger, Hazel<br />
Reder Redinger and Marcia Redinger Crowley.<br />
It is awarded through the Jordan College of<br />
Fine Arts.<br />
to scholastically top students in the Jordan<br />
College of Fine Arts with preference given to<br />
vocal studies majors. Mrs. Williams, Class of<br />
1939, established several scholarships at <strong>Butler</strong><br />
in honor of her family.<br />
Jackson Wiley Scholarship. This award<br />
honors Jackson Wiley, who served as conductor<br />
of the <strong>Butler</strong> Symphony Orchestra from 1969<br />
to 1991 and who was an ambassador for <strong>Butler</strong><br />
through the Greater Indianapolis Youth Symphony<br />
Orchestra. Recipients are recommended<br />
by the chair of the School of Music in consultation<br />
with the director of the <strong>Butler</strong> Symphony<br />
and in cooperation with the financial aid office.<br />
Preference is given to upperclass students<br />
pursuing an undergraduate degree in music.<br />
Students must demonstrate an interest in and<br />
participate in the <strong>Butler</strong> Symphony Orchestra.<br />
Woman’s Department Club Music Merit<br />
Award. The Woman’s Department Club of<br />
Indianapolis established a music merit award<br />
in 1978 to benefit full-time students in the<br />
Jordan College of Fine Arts. The Club and<br />
other donors have since supported this fund,<br />
which is used to present annual merit awards in<br />
School of Music through the Jordan College of<br />
Fine Arts.<br />
Theatre<br />
Alma Meyer Fitzgerald Memorial Theatre<br />
Award. Francis Fitzgerald established this award<br />
in memory of his wife, who received her degree<br />
in theatre from <strong>Butler</strong> in 1936. Francis, also<br />
Class of 1936, and Alma were both instructors<br />
in the Jordan College of Fine Arts. Alma was<br />
active in theatre throughout the Indianapolis<br />
community. The couple was married for<br />
more than 50 years before her death in 1994.<br />
Recipients are selected on the basis of ability<br />
and achievement in the Department of Theatre<br />
during the junior year; the award will be given<br />
during the senior year.<br />
Daniel C. Warrick Outstanding Theatre<br />
Major Award. Family and friends of Dr. Daniel<br />
C. Warrick have established this award in his<br />
memory. Warrick was an associate professor<br />
and chairman of the Department of Theatre at<br />
the time of his death, in February 1997. Dan<br />
believed that the purpose of art was to inspire<br />
people to make reasoned moral choices and<br />
take appropriate action. The recipient(s) will<br />
be selected on a basis of exemplary service to<br />
Ruth Rasmussen Williams Memorial Scholarship.<br />
John Antonelli, friend and neighbor<br />
of the late Ruth Williams, established this endowed<br />
scholarship in 2000 in her memory and<br />
honor to commemorate her love of the arts and<br />
loyal support of her alma mater. It is awarded<br />
