Frank O. Sharp Memorial Scholarship.<br />
Frank Sharp, a native of Anderson, Ind.,<br />
was instrumental in founding Indiana’s first<br />
television station. The combined efforts and<br />
resources of a number of individuals have made<br />
this memorial scholarship available to media<br />
arts majors who have a financial need and who<br />
have distinguished themselves scholastically.<br />
Leon and Alma Stanley Journalism Scholarship.<br />
This scholarship honors the Stanleys<br />
and Leon Stanley’s 40-year career with The<br />
Indianapolis News. Recipients will be chosen for<br />
superior scholarship achievement in journalism<br />
and will have a potential for leadership and<br />
good moral character. The scholarship may be<br />
awarded to a freshman and can be renewed.<br />
David H. and Virginia M. Waite Scholarship.<br />
Dr. David H. Waite, professor of speech<br />
at <strong>Butler</strong> and former department head, is<br />
nationally acclaimed for his expertise in<br />
communication studies and semiotics. His<br />
friends, former students and colleagues<br />
established the Waite scholarship in 1994 to<br />
honor both him and his wife, Virginia M.<br />
Waite. The scholarship supports communication<br />
studies students selected on the basis of<br />
professional goals, academic achievement and<br />
personal characteristics, with the objective of<br />
providing awards to applicants who have independent<br />
spirits and demonstrate outstanding<br />
potential to be effective communicators. The<br />
Department of Communication Studies and<br />
the Office of Financial Aid select recipients.<br />
Robert T. and Jean W. Whitcraft Scholarship.<br />
This scholarship was established by a bequest<br />
from the estate of Robert T. Whitcraft, Class<br />
of 1930, with first preference for <strong>Butler</strong> students<br />
pursuing a course of study in journalism,<br />
communications or advertising. Jean Wells<br />
Whitcraft, Class of 1944, was a dedicated<br />
Indianapolis volunteer and avid supporter of<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />
Matt White Scholarship. This scholarship<br />
resulted from the efforts of many friends of<br />
Matt White, Class of 1989, who was diagnosed<br />
with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gerig’s<br />
disease) in 2000. Fellow media arts majors,<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
Delta Tau Delta fraternity brothers, members<br />
of the track and cross country teams, and others<br />
wanted to honor Matt’s enthusiasm and positive<br />
attitude. This scholarship provides support<br />
to media arts majors who express interest in<br />
broadcasting. If possible, recipients should also<br />
show an interest and achievement in <strong>Butler</strong><br />
athletics, with further preference given to<br />
participants in track or cross country.<br />
Jordan College of Fine Arts<br />
Awards<br />
*The following is a list of the current<br />
scholarships. Most are used to underwrite<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> financial aid programs and<br />
cannot be applied for directly unless otherwise<br />
indicated.<br />
Dance<br />
Peggy Dorsey Memorial Ballet Scholarship.<br />
Scholarships are awarded to students of dance<br />
in the Jordan College of Fine Arts. Peggy<br />
Dorsey, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, and a<br />
30-year member of <strong>Butler</strong>’s dance faculty, died<br />
in 1984. Before coming to <strong>Butler</strong>, she danced<br />
professionally throughout England and Scotland.<br />
The fund was established with memorial<br />
gifts from friends and family.<br />
Dixie Durr Endowed Scholarship in Dance.<br />
Dixie Durr received her bachelor of arts degree<br />
in dance in 1962 from <strong>Butler</strong>. Durr choreographed<br />
for the concert stage in New York<br />
City and was an adjunct professor at New<br />
York <strong>University</strong>. She later served as Chair of<br />
the department of Theatre at Michigan State<br />
<strong>University</strong>, where, at the time of her death, she<br />
was professor emerita. Durr was a member of<br />
the Board of Directors of the Congress on<br />
Research in Dance and the Professional<br />
Advisory Committee to the Dance Notation<br />
Bureau, a member of the Board of Directors<br />
of the American Dance Guild, and President<br />
of the Michigan Dance Association from<br />
1987–1989. The National Dance Association<br />
recognized her with a Presidential Citation<br />
in 1994. This scholarship was established by<br />
a bequest and will offer tuition assistance to<br />
students studying dance.<br />
Eileen Poston Dance Scholarship. A bequest<br />
from the estate of Eileen Poston Dollens, Class<br />
of 1960, provides assistance to dance majors<br />
in the Jordan College of Fine Arts. The highly
